The idealistic creators and adopters of "4chan.org" were attempting to escape the old systems of control - they thought that with the anonymity offered by this imageboard software that they could achieve untrammelled freedom of thought and opinion. In reality, they were simply leading their users into new and more insidious forms of control.
The results were strange and disturbing.
