I like the theme song... as simple as the lyrics may be... Honestly, I'm sure there are a hundred videos explaining why this cartoon exists alongside the Real Ghostbusters... it is amazing how they are both 1986 productions, but the Filmation cartoon looks like it came straight out of the 1970's. While the Real Ghostbusters was another standard DiC production of sourcing the animation out to like 10 different Asian animation studios. With the best animated episodes being shipped off to TMS, and Toei. Filmation studios did have the Ghostbusters name first. They thought they had the animated film adation in the bag. But even ABC were like: "Fuck no" .

I watched very little of the Filmation cartoon. Wasn't impressed as a kid. I LOVED the Real Ghostbusters so much that when was four years old, I insisted to many nanny, "I'm not Brian, I'm Peter."

Not sure what the appeal of the ape one is over the movie adaptation. Would you concede the latter was at least more ambitious? I remember episodes where they followed the Boogeyman to the land of dreams, went to Hell itself, had a Ragnarok episode, and a Lovecraft Episode ("The Collect Call of Cthulhu"). Real save the world type stuff. Did the Filmation show get much bigger than haunted houses?

DiC was one of the real first animation studios to extensively outsource their animation to Japan, which started with Inspector Gadget in 1983. It really created the western character design meets Anime aesthetic look that became dominant in the early to late 80's. 1983 to like 1987 were the peak years of that. The Japanese studios started asking for too much money, animation shifted to Taiwan, Korea... possibly even China for all I know. Filmation was still doing the 'limited animation'; thing and the animation was mostly done in-house. Which is why there is a lot of recycled animation and other cost cutting measures used. DiC's animation and layouts could be a little sloppier at times, but the animation generally looked more dynamic. The original pitch video still looks pretty cool for Ghostbusters:
