In the original script, the Alien was intelligent and even could talk. He simply knew how the pod worked. Furthermore, he was supposed to kill/rape Ripley (that's why she survived in the end—ever since he saw her fucking the captain, he'd desperately wanted her for himself), and then even fool the ground crew with a radio.

But something else is interesting - Ridley removed the whole sexual motif and deprived Alien of human features, while those funny panties are something you can see on his early storyboards.

Stowing away, hiding, awaiting the humans that might eventually arrive to rescue the female. It might've planned on breaching her stasis capsule after she fell asleep, to turn her into an egg. Turn Ripley into an egg, her cat into a mini-egg, crawl back into the pipes, go into its own stasis, until ship is found, now it's got more ppl to parasitize.

If you look at Alien and JUST Alien, it made sense to me that the creature has some measure of intelligence comparable to a human. It got in the escape shuttle before Ripley did because it had determined that was its purpose, especially once the ship started coming apart. Once stowed away in the shuttle, I also thought that was why it left Ripley alone until forced out, because it needed a human to get it where it's going, like a parasite.
