The Disney Star Wars trilogy would've been saved if they just made Finn the actual protagonist. He had the most compelling backstory and, unlike Rey, actually had an arc (or at least the start of one).

The Finn character shouldn't have even been a thing in the first place

Finn could be the best protagonist of all time and people would ask, "Why didn't they do this with Luke?"

Finn and Luke could've been a fun duo, like a more autistic Men in Black

Other than realising being Evil is bad, you could argue he starts of only caring about himself, but later devotes himelsf to the cause (which is arguably the same arc as Han Solo, but Han never held a lightsaber)

His arc is
serving evil -> only cares about self -> joins the cause
Han Solo was just
only cares about self -> joins the cause

His one and only role in the story is to simp for Rey, how could you see his character as anything else?

But yeah Finn was a missed opportunity. Boyega is Nigerian, a country that actually has child soldiers, and as far as I know, he didn't talk to any former child soldiers to figure out how to play a character like that. I think if he'd been less lazy as an actor he would still be getting work as Finn, but it didn't seem like he wanted to. I imagine starring in 3 SW movies would make you hate it after awhile.
