In the first three resident evil the environment carries the game.
Hollywood does not have the talent to make a movie where the environment is at the center. To them it will always be something surrounding characters

There was nothing realistic about tank controls, but first one was indeed slow paced. Yet the further down the series you go, the more hear you have. Hell, Code Veronica had plenty of monsters, respawning points and John-Woo style cutscenes already.
The first RE movie matches the original slow vibe to some degree. There are like two scenes with a lot of zombies and most of the time cast interacts with environment, rather than creatures. And it was 2002. Yes, after the first installment films went full action, but it was about the same time when games also took that turn.

Paul W.S. Anderson has never given a shit about characters. He is hyperfixated on environments. That's why there's such a focus on the pyramid in AvP, the Hive in RE, stuff like that.
