I don't know how that's even done but it's another criminal activity done by criminals who know other criminals, so word could still get around. If you did anything under your real name after you decide to skip town, you'd almost certainly make yourself vulnerable sooner or later. And hopefully you've got actual cash in hand stuffed away to live by in the short run, but in the long run you'd have to just be a working stiff somewhere, again with a new identity.
The guy trying to retire from Tony's crew and move to Florida to start a new life really screwed up by asking, once Tony knew that was his intention it was game over. Never really understood that. At least if you don't have a target on your back you have the luxury of time, but things would be frantic if you didn't. I wonder if any irl mobsters just got tired of the life and walked away from it all. Did you hear any story like that?
