I think it's not as easy as it sounds because you have to make a new identity. I don't know how that's even done but it's another criminal activity done by criminals who know other criminals, so word could still get around. If you did anything under your real name after you decide to skip town, you'd almost certainly make yourself vulnerable sooner or later. And hopefully you've got actual cash in hand stuffed away to live by in the short run, but in the long run you'd have to just be a working stiff somewhere, again with a new identity.
