I liked him from the get go as an antagonist that's actually in the police department. Dexter needed a foil that didn't buy his act. I remember being dumbfounded when they actually killed him off and kept waiting for them to spring a 'he's not really dead moment'. Now that I think about it Doakes being on the run from the police while trying to prove his innocence and Dexter as the Butcher would've made for a way better season 3.

3 isn't THAT bad. It's just a lull after the end of season 2. It's hard to come back after Doakes got killed off as a major antagonist force. But they picked it up in 4 again and got on track. 2 was just really high as a bar so it seems to fall flatter and gets shit on pretty unfairly for it. And it's stuck between 2 and 4 which were major peaks for the series.

Tbh it's eerie how closely this show's progression follows Game of Thrones
