Nothing inherently bad with a good ruler who understands the system in order to be effective in getting things done that normally wouldn’t be possible. In this case, the ruling class is part of a secret esoteric group of magic users whose stated goal is the infliction of suffering and the individualistic amassing of power at the expense of others. The switch to being an empire was abrupt, but I think it’s accurate that completely treating down the power structures of the Republic would take decades. The line in ANH still makes sense that only then were they able to dissolve the Senate.

Lucas had visual elements of The Roman Empire incorporated into the Empire’s aesthetic. They were meant to look like a futuristic Praetorian Guard. When they made the film, they were just supposed to look cool and add flare to the Emperor. Obviously, in the years since, the comic book autists have created a dozen back stories for them and everything else in Star Wars.

I think its in the original novelisation of the star wars script from 1976 that they described the empire as being run a politcian who isolates himself and is controlled by advisers. Its basically Nixon. The rebels are the vietnamese who exploited small weaknesses despite the fact they were up against a bigger militia and complex weapons.
