Besides the money issues, which were a real problem with the pre-production of the project, it seems Jodorowsky's Dune wasn't made partly because it was seen by studios as potentially politically dangerous.
In Jororowsky's Dune film, the ending of the story was re-written so Paul becomes an unironic savior figure, the cynical angle of the original story is removed. He's killed by the Emperor, but his death makes him martyr, and Paul's death induces a psychic awakening across the galaxy. He brings spiritual enlightenment to the galaxy, and this is done in a sequence which was meant to break the fourth wall: to have audiences crying "I am Muad'Dib!!" along with the characters on screen. Echoing "I am Spartacus" and foreshadowing George Lucas' "May the Force be with you"
I believe this was potentially seen as politically threatening irl/rabble-rousing.
If anyone could have forced enlightenment en-masse in the populace, it would have been Jodorowsky

We got so many great movies which were either directly or indirectly inspired by Jodorowsky's Dune treatment.
So it does kind of exist.
One of my favorite Dune-likes is Dan O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead.

I never understood this. Yes, the concept art is 10/10. Absolutely incredible. But is anyone raving about El Topo or Holy Mountain in 2025? Jodorowsky just isn't that good. He would've tainted the artwork created by HR Giger and Chris Foss.

The metabarons are the deadliest warriors in the universe until one decides he doesn't want to fight anymore. The Story of the family is told in the original, then some newer stories with the current metabaron.
Highly recommend reading it, its very entertaining and gets pretty wild at times. The Incall is also Set in the same universe
