Laurence Olivier was relentlessly handsome
Aside from Cassavetes I couldnโt help but chuckle every time he showed up on screen in road house
Been thinking about this ever since I saw it.
>>213852315looks like Eric Roberts
>>213852246 (OP)>Favorite Ben Gazzara performance?Saint Jack, followed by Chinese Bookie (duh)
>>213852292Maybe not in classic sense since it's a studio picture, but in many ways it is an art film. It's a bold exploration of the subconscious, the taboo, what lies under the pasteboard mask of civilized humanity. It highlights the contradiction of being, that our noblest and most base qualities are so closely tied as to be inseparable. It's a Schraderian, Bressonian, all singing, all dancing tour-de-force. And the soundtrack slaps.
>>213852246 (OP)>QOTDi guess it would have to be anatomy of a murder because i'm a huge jimmy stewart fag but also unrelated i have been trying to see picrel for a very long time.

>>213853136what about The Cat (1992)
>>213853185I'll allow it.
>>213852895At best it can be considered as an American precursor to cinema du look. Along with One from the Heart, Mishima and Body Heat
>>213853262Girl is ugly, i take it back, i won't allow it.
>>213853136Any of yโall niggas on duelingbook? Play goats?
>>213853261Diva came out in '81 though so maybe not a precursor per say. Still an interesting correlation, there was definitely something in the water of the zeitgeist of the early 80's that made those directors prioritize aesthetics.
>>213853412That was the end of New Hollywood.

>>213852246 (OP)This movie is underrated, it did a lot to pave the way to neo-noir's resurgence in the U.S in the late 70s and early 80s alongside Taxi Driver.
>>213855491>underratedIt was during release but in the last years it has had a positive reevaluation. That said, it is ineed a great film. Absolutely fucking great night scenes and depiction of inner despair... Been meaning to rewatch it in the past days.

>The strangely embarrassing predicament of a lady who finds herself possessed of mystical feline temptations, especially one to claw people to death. [...] Ladies who have such temptationsโin straight horror pictures, at leastโshould exercise their digits a bit more freely than does Simone Simon in this film. The Lady from Shanghai
>For a fellow who has as much talent with a camera as Orson Welles and whose powers of pictorial invention are as fluid and as forcible as his, this gentleman certainly has a strange way of marring his films with sloppiness.Stromboli
>After all the unprecedented interest that the picture 'Stromboli' has aroused โ it being, of course, the fateful drama which Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini have made โ it comes as a startling anticlimax to discover that this widely heralded film is incredibly feeble, inarticulate, uninspiring and painfully banal.Quo Vadis

>You expect something more for your money than a little flurry of attempted violence at the end. And especially when other people around this fellow do not behave too intelligently, not even the doctors, you have good reason to get impatient with the whole dismal thing. Those who remember the creeping terror and eeriness of Mr. Rouechรฉ's real-life yarn will be sorry to learn that there is little terror or eeriness in the film. >>213872072>You're making all of this upMost filmmakers from the Nazi era other than Leni were either oldfags or unrepentant Nazis, so they either died or were blacklisted from the industry for obvious reasons.
I don't think it's the greatest loss ever in the grand scheme of the history of film regarding Nazi-era filmmakers not continuing on with their projects, but I do think that the movies produced under that era should be re-evaluated to a degree the way other films produced by brutal regimes have.

Iโm glad PTA was able to secure a blockbuster budget at least once in his career. Thereโs a stink in all this though. Despite the widespread acclaim for his films, PTA has always represented a punk attitude in the film community. His work is definitive of the Gen X spirit where you didnโt watch the movies or listen to the music of the mainstream. Instead, you discovered your niche, your little corner of the sandbox where few others were playing, and in doing so it felt exclusive. It was about making a connection to material that pop culture was incapable of producing. That was the definition of โcoolโ back then. Thatโs clearly gone now. Being โcoolโ today is like the flame that burns bright and quickly fades. Iโm glad a PTA film is getting maximum transparency and lots of pre-release buzz, but it also feels like a massive sellout. Part of what made PTA so cool was that he never became a household name in the way that Nolan, Cameron or Spielberg have. And for somewhat selfish and admittedly silly fandom reasons, I donโt want him to become a household name now. Whatever happens with this film, good or bad at the box office, I feel like this will be the only time PTA swings for the blockbuster fences.
>>213872336>I'm glad PTA was able to secure a blockbuster budget at least once in his career.Yeah but it's for a movie that is undisputably going to be his worst, hell I'm more interested in Aronofsky's new kino than OBAA

>My dream is to
create a completely โSpinoza-istโ film, built upon ethical categories: rage, joy, pride โฆ and essentially each of these categories would be a pure block of sensations, passing from one to the other with enormous suddenness. So the film would be a constant vibration of emotions and affects, and all that would reunite us, reinscribe us into the material in which weโre formed: the perceptual material of our first years, our first moments, our childhood. Before speech. Thatโs the impulse โ the desire โ which led to the film.โ

My redneck neighbors are fighting again. Time for some unfiltered kino.

>>213880635I wonder how hard is Serra rewriting his script for that Russian-Ukraine movie he was making, considered the current ongoings.
I have no idea why he thought it's a good idea, just stick to shooting Spanish and Polynesian countryside and people in Renaissance costumes. The bullfighter movie was quite bad too, nothing of note going there visually or in subjects.
Have any films proper come out of China? Besides martial arts kino and Wuxia (even though "Hero" is quite good)? Like, there has to be something noteworthy out there, that probably simply never made it into the "cultural exports" category like various new wave movements across the globe.
RIP guy from Mastodon btw

>>213881213Hello newfriend. Yes, China has a big film industry, and there were several waves. "Fifth generation" and "Sixth generation" after it for example. Right now it's hard to say if there's any current "wave", things are fragmented mostly, but there are a lot of Chinese art movies made and constantly appearing at the film festivals around the world. A lot of those films are censored in China itself and don't get to come out, but China seems to nonetheless allow the production of those because it's good for international optics (similarly how in USSR directors like Tarkovsky were kept around for the sake of showing off to the people internationally, although in currewnt China things are a bit more loose and less controlled than in the USSR).

For example, one of the best current filmmakers is Bi Gan. He is relatively new, debut feature was released in 2016. Another active filmmaker is the documentary director Wang Bing, recently he started to get censored harder in mainland China (the officials didn't like something in the Youth trilogy and overall Xi has been cracking down, probably preparing for the invasion of Taiwan similarly how Russia after the liberalization of early 00s started cracking down around 2007 cause they already were planning potential wars and needed to "strengthen" the nation).
