I think Tarantino is one of this most overrated filmmakers in the history of cinema. Honestly. I watched Reservoir Dogs because on a recommendation and it bored the hell out of me. I watched Hateful 8 because Kurt Russell and it bored the hell out of me. I just do not find Tarantino's film entertaining.

I wholeheartedly agree with him. I've never heard a contrarian argue their case against Tarantino well. If you dislike him for being derivative, then you should dislike every other filmmaker ever. It's the most derivative artform. All original ideas are already gone and used, it's just a competition of who does an idea again in the most interesting way, and Tarantino hasn't made a single uninteresting film. Even Death Proof, while by far his shittiest film, is pretty funny.

Tarantino is what I call a "gateway director". He's very unoriginal and all of his ideas are derivative but this allows people who watch his films to research into what he ripped off and discover far better works from all around the world, from different directors and from every decade. Fincher has made only 2 good movies and he's never written a screenplay. Neither are close to the top 10 living directors today.

One issue I see is that Tarantino can only celebrate, he can find humour but he can't critique in a measured way (Jackie Brown side-steps this), so he's a superlative artist but not well trained; a great natural who makes movies for himself, like George Lucas. Nolan may make less interesting looking films, but they feel more 'full' in that his direction can celebrate and critique characters equally; they focus on character strengths and weigh them against social values. Fincher is a stylist, portraitist, war photographer... technician, which is nearly distinct from the calling of artist; he's embedded with his characters but doesn't go beyond the script to celebrate or critique in that same, heady way. It doesn't get quite as far as Scorsese does at times. Fight Club has some exhilarating elements but it's the seedy world of boxing and high-fashion photography. Fincher's Tyler Durden doesn't exist in the same evocative world of Dieterle's devil in The Devil And Daniel Webster, because it's a personal, material, mental world and not a more profound, expressionistic one where the contrast of souls (and not personalities) is felt as something palpable and real.

The worldview of a director is more important than whether or not they write their own screenplays, no one should criticise a painter for choosing to work in a tradition.
