This hasn't aged well in a post-Sopranos world. I'm sure in the 90s it was probably really interesting, but it's just boring now. A doctor whose morals are so upset that he stood to gain from other's murders takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of it all? And the investigating isn't even interesting. He's going around Germany and people just fucking answer his questions? The blind guy was just so convenient. He hits a dead end, and the last person he asked asked for leads for his investigation is neighbors with someone who knew his quarry. Just so boring. About to drop this.

The ending was a huge copout, too.
>will docta Tenma shoot Johan or not? He was struggling with this for the whole story, what will his final decision be?
>actually he will make no decision at all, he will be absolved of this story long moral dilemma by a random drunk that shoots Johan instead

It was mediocre when it released. Manga/anime has this problem where something that is phenomenal for their scene gets rave reviews, but is shit when held up to film.

Nah you're not brainlet we've just moved on greatly from an era where such moral grandstanders as Doctor Tenma were gripping. Especially when he's held against such cartoonish (as in unreal and stupidly simple) characters as the director of the hospital, and his two co-surgeons who are also murdered. Just when you think there's some depth to the story, like when the hospital director says
>You did what you thought was right. That's good enough.
The author goes
>lol btw the director replaced him as head of neurosurgery
And that stupid ":OOO" moment with Eva says
>Some lives are worth more than others
No fucking shit. Or when the blind guy tells Tenma
>The boy was listening to my WWII stories.........with a smile
As if we don't live in a world where people watch horror movies for the gore. I have no idea how Monster got as big as it did. A dub in 2025? Where are the standards?
>>213871422
His backstory is that he had a thesis he wanted to research in Germany because his older brother was going to take over the family practice. He doesn't have one thing to say, at least this early in the story, about his parents instilling any values in him.

>t. didn't get the message
the anime is saying that murder is always wrong, tenma is ready to taint his hands just to kill the psychopath
at the end of the series tenma remains clean, never killed anybody, he remains pure
tenma is basically The Dark Knight with no-kill policy
and johan is The Joker trying to corrupt tenma

>This hasn't aged well
It wasn't ever good.
It's a literal copy of the manga.
They didn't adapt it at all - they left in all the stupid exposition that comic books have to do, like characters explaining what's happening every step of the way.
You're supposed to take all that shit out and do it visually when you're making a TV show or Film.

One of the worst directed animes i've ever seen. (good premise though).

It's bad because in season 3 of Sopranos, you have the two city councilmen who enact a scam with Tony to fuck poverty stricken blacks out of housing. At the end, they have a heart to heart about why they got into politics in the first place, and how their morals became eroded at the tide they kept "shoveling shit" against. "If we don't do it, somebody else will." If that storyline were in Monster, the councilmen would have laughed to themselves and said something like
>Oh, my dear Tony Soprano, this is just the way the world is!!

I think people are just simps for anime. Pluto is just as banal as Monster yet is universally praised.

I felt like GiTS and Time of Eve did everything Pluto did, but better so I went and rewatched those. They were a lot worse than I remembered. Made me feel like I'd outgrown anime a little. I enjoyed watching Planetes for the first time a couple years ago though.

Anime are always shortstrapped on time and budget. Making some big creative effort that works out would have taken a lot of time and sometime the original publisher or author aren't too keen on that.

>the anime is saying that murder is always wrong
Then Tenma should have made a choice not to shoot, not be robbed of that choice by a random fucking drunk. I got the message just fine, you on the other hand seem to not know what a copout is.
>tenma is basically The Dark Knight with no-kill policy
Tenma already made a concious decision to shoot Roberto with intent to kill before, that he didn't die was also a lucky copout. This was right after Roberto interrupted him from killing Johan the first time. He made a concious decision to spend months learning how to kill and carry a killing implement with him at all times for the explicit purpose of killing Johan. Pure my ass, he was simply deus ex machina'd out of being a killer every time.

You might as well put a serial killer is solitary confinement, then claim he made a recovery because he didn't kill anyone. You're fucking stupid.

Why are you retards always like this? Typical midwits who confuse the show gaving a message with the message making sense. The ending was a fucking copout. The entire show is one extremely long buildup with no payoff whatsoever. Instead of just keeping some things vague, it chooses not to commit to any idea. For fuck's sake, it fails to even show what Johan's plan was. His most elaborate scheme involves dressing up like his sister, for fuck's sake. Ironically, that's the most coherent thing about the series.

GiTS (the movie) is all style no substance. I mean, there is some deep stuff in there, but it's hidden under technobabble that made me uninvested in the story. The tank fight is still amazing.

I did watch it and finished it. The soundtrack is pretty great and the initial premise is good. But as it goes on it just keeps going, to the point where the initial premise feels like an after thought. There's also no reason for it to be animated. The story could've been done perfectly in Live action and it probably would've been much better. Overall it's a chill show I guess, The ending is interesting. Just never gets to the heights of something like Death Note. I wish it was more psychological and was about tenma secretly being johan the whole time. That would've been kino
