I honestly think its one of the worst (non-supernatural) monsters to get killed by in television. Even the Blob (which also dissolves you) does it much quicker. I'd kill for a good sequel.

It's one of the best superdeep horror movies ever.

>good sequel.

I mean the sequel bait is supposed to be set on land with a completely different threat and monster. It's actually admirable if they go that route, just completely change it up.

so long as the monster is equivalently horrific (or worse) I'd take it

What do you think it could be? It's on an island with an active volcano; reminds me of Skull Island. Some kind of inbred dinosaur (because the species has been stuck there for 65 million years) would be cool

hard to top the Octalus but if I had to think of something I'd probably go with like some kind of horrifically deformed ape. Like gigantopithecus. Maybe more than one. Almost intelligent in their sadism. Not really human in their torturing but like, imagine being the kid in the harambe enclosure but he didn't get put down, just being pulled around by a gigantic monster until it gets bored and starts biting chunks off of you.

That's not a bad idea. Could always use more R-rated killer ape movies. Congo could use the company.

This movie was great, it has it all, great effects both practical and cgi, entertaining action, funny actors and a great music theme. Critics hated it for no reason, then again it was the late 90s, they hated any movie with violence.
Virus is good too.

It's amazing he was able to hold his breath for so long inside that monsters intestinal track.

iirc the director said it was skull island and the film was going to be a launch pad for a sequel where the survivors try to make it off.

But Deep rising didn't do that well because of Titanic
Deep Rising : January 30, 1998
Titanic : January 23 1998

However, the CGI was pretty good >>213873110 and the director went on to make the Mummy next year using the same CGI techniques.

I saw it at the movies. It was kind of disappointing at the time, but in retrospect, if I'd known Hollywood couldn't even deliver this level of slop anymore I'd have appreciated it more. The idea of being digested alive is horrendous.

I was expecting something of the quality of Tremors, not necessarily Aliens, but it fell a bit flat (neither scary/actiony enough, not funny enough). I think I was also still getting used to the heavy CGI useage.

We had some much higher quality genre films at the time too, like Starship Troopers, but this felt way more like the other medium budget films like Event Horizon.

Also I think Sommers did a more improved job of the supernatural adventure stuff with The Mummy right after.
