One of the reasons for Japanese cinema getting worse during the 70s was the audiences choosing watching TV over going to theaters, and one of the reasons for that was the rise of anime, especially among the younger generations. From that generation, kids that could have become filmmakers instead chose to work in manga and anime.
So yes, anime was already fucking with Jap films back then, as part of the rising TV industry.

Anime is really exaggerated/theatrical. Which I suspect is why autists like it so much. If a girl is mad at her boyfriend, she hits him with a giant fans. And the characters' inner monologues play out loud.

It really doesn't translate to live-action though. You can see this with Western adaptations of anime stories.

In the 90s, Jap media was completely dominated by sentai, anime and variety tv. Young directors got hired by these genre but when they move on into real cinema they don't realize that what they learned previously does not apply in live action movies.
