Yes but to get paid as a scientist you need a benefactor who will sponsor you and decide what you research and publish. And the benefactors control massive networks that publish and review research findings in a feedback loop to create influence through quantity. And they use these findings for whatever purpose they want.

A guy like Mendel studying flowers in his garden in his free time would be considered a quack today and nobody would hear from him.
