Erm, because it was filmed in front of a live audience, like many sitcoms before it? It’s not edited in.

You're telling me they brought a crowd of Irish people in some field in the middle of nowhere to watch this?

they film in front of an audience but then dub on extra laughter in editing in case the live audience reaction isnt that good, which can be the case during retakes when the audience has heard the joke a few times before.

They pre-record the outdoor scenes and then show them on a monitor to the live studio audience, who laugh at them.

They film the few exterior shots ages ago in Ireland, then they went to London and would perform the episode in its entirety: the pre-recorded bits being displayed on screens to the audience, then the actors coming out onto stage to perform the indoor scenes live.

This is how sitcoms have been filmed since the 1950s.

What are you, four? You've never heard of a laugh track before?
They are a staple of many TV comedies, whole shows are built around them.
Some people hate laugh tracks, I think they're alright. I mean most stand up routines bomb without laughter, it's a huge part of what makes comedy enjoyable.

Americans made them do it. They wouldn't have done it but they needed American funding and at that time Americans were demanding laugh tracks.

It's actually the exact opposite, though you know this already.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M*A*S*H_(TV_series)#Laugh_track
On one occasion during an airing on BBC2 in the UK, the laugh track was accidentally left on, and viewers expressed their displeasure; an apology from the network for the "technical difficulty" was later released, for during its original run on BBC2 in the UK, it had been shown without the laugh track. UK DVD critics speak poorly of the laugh track, stating "canned laughter is intrusive at the best of times, but with a programme like M*A*S*H, it's downright unbearable."

Sometimes it's the recorded response of a genuine audience, sometimes it's just pre-recorded laughter being played when there's a joke. I think the idea is that laughter is infectious, or that it's better to watch things with other people present. Either way, it's irritating and unnecessary. I avoid watching anything with the easily pleased run-of-the-mill bastards for a reason, I don't appreciate the illusion being forced upon me.

Why can't people just admit laugh tracks were a terrible idea
