Because the kangaroo stuff was added last minute cause they knew they had a stinker of a movie that no one would come see so they took a story that had been floating round in Australia for year and shoehorned it in and made their whole advertising campaign based around this minor part of the film

Sometimes the people doing the marketing genuinely know what would make a better film than the people who created it.
See also Ruby Gillman. The marketing made it out like the two lead girls in the film would be frenemies and the film would be about the mermaid taking the Kraken under her wing, teaching her to be popular etc. despite them being rivals. The actual movie was much more plain, about Kraken learning she's a super powerful princess and the mermaid obviously just trying to trick her from the start.
Possibly one of the few films where everyone was disappointed they had been baited into their being a lesbian subtext

All of the marketing made it out to be a wisecracking talking Kangaroo. It was just a normal wild kangaroo that couldn't talk but there was a very short dream sequence where one of the characters saw it rapping (this was in literally every trailer).
