It's a completely different feel than LAV (though an equally cute waifu) but it does subtly have the same message, though generally more hopeful and less gut punching. Ultimately the end destination is the same however.

It's an odd choice, because the book is not that complicated. It's like Kaufman was scared to have been mistaken for making a horror film and just needlessly butchered it. Adding all that musical stuff also just seemed lazy. Like he couldn't think of a way to translate to a visual medium what the author did in the book with the characters melding and switching places. I like the film overall, while also disappointed by what it could have been.
