You are kept completely in the dark the whole time.
The way the characters act and interact with eachother is completely unnerving.
There is a healthy balance of dialogue and spooky scenes.
It takes itself 100% seriously, and never jumps the shark like many other horror flicks.

The best word to describe it is "tasteful" which is highly unusual for its genre.
