Well there's my excuse to warm up this old pasta.
When you consider the idea behind it, fusion is the literal sense of it is two monsters becoming one. This is a frequently used metaphor applied to marriage or sex. However, upon further consideration, becoming one implies loss of individuality. Two lose their distinctions and become a new individual that is simply not either of the original entities, thus rendering it impossible to maintain a relationship. The essence of fusion includes mind, body, and soul, and is fundamentally a destructive process in regards to the original individuals, even if reversible.
Xyz, on the other hand, retains the notion of individuality of the originals in that they still exist as distinct materials. It even plays up the sexual aspect by physically overlaying the cards. However, xyz is a meaningless invented term that has an overstretched pun to "exceed" which really only comes into play with the notion of rank-up, which is a singular individual evolving as opposed to the relationship between multiples.
Which finally brings us to synchro. Synchronization can exist between distinct systems. Instruments in tune still have their distinct sounds. Machines in tune still have their distinct parts. Feelings in tune are mutual experiences between individuals. Synchro represents union in purpose while preserving the characteristic distinctions of the originals.
