It is yuri but it stays on the friendship side with a bit of romance. Which is unfortunate especially considering the amount of hetbait. The manga was published in a kids magazine maybe that's why. Not an easy recommendation. Quite a unique experience.
The artist also promotes it as yuri if it matters.

I think it'll work for me. I like yuri that's tragic and a little unsatisfying. It being untranslated was a good excuse for me to finally set up Mokuro. I'm now through half the first volume.

This is a very charming manga. Lots of usual yuri tropes ("I don't know what love is", "turns out trying to help your crush get with a boy does not feel good", "why does she look so good in a yukata?") feel much fresher when the characters are 12 rather than 16.

I finished Sorairo Memorial. Can't say I've ever looked up words in a dictionary through tears before.

It's about two sixth-grader besties, Sora and Iroha. Sora's our protagonist, your typical clumsy crybaby shoujo heroine with low self-esteem (though she's quite clever) and Iroha's the cool, tall, early bloomer class favorite who still absolutely adores Sora. One day Sora, as the daughter of a Shinto shrine, sees a shinigami who says he's pre-scouting a soul who will be taken in a year. Sora quickly realizes he must mean Iroha and decides to give her as many good memories as she can in the time they have left.

They're also gay for each other. Sora's still a bit stuck in an "I don't know what love is, so I'll just spend all my time with Iroha-chan and admire how beautiful she is" mode, but Iroha says she's in love with Sora many times, and the words used for their relationship are ai and koi.

The manga could have been even better if their relationship had been a bit more complex. Now it's very idealized, even though any close relationship has its issues. The chapter where Iroha tries to nobly get Sora a boyfriend only to discover she absolutely hates the idea touches on the darker side of love and I'd have appreciated more of that. Still, it's a sweet relationship and the final scenes with an older Sora will probably make you cry if you're at all inclined.

Thanks for the recommendation, Anon. Not what I expected when I opened the child yuri thread.

Anonymous No.4439564

To simplify it a little, Sora was destined to die as a child too, but the shinigami and Iroha sacrifice themselves so she can live. She dedicates her life to helping parents who've lost a child in Iroha's memory. The final scene shows her dying as an old woman, holding phone charms she and Iroha made together. As she enters the afterlife, Iroha comes to meet her jokingly scolding her for making her wait so long, Sora's soul takes her child form and they hug. So more bittersweet than bad end.

The artist is a veteran shoujo mangaka. With more than four decades of experience she knows what she does.

Frankly, the manga could've worked without the yuri but the artist decided to include it because why the fuck not.
Though she'd had a lesbian side character in her other manga before. That's how I discovered SoraIro.
>The manga could have been even better if their relationship had been a bit more complex.
I also felt it lacked a bit of punch. The manga production was troubled. It switched magazines, there was a long hiatus. Maybe it affected the story.
Still some chapters were powerful. I read the manga while listening to a melancholic album and it left an impression on me. There's something delicate about the girls' relationship that I don't find often in yuri manga.

>Frankly, the manga could've worked without the yuri but the artist decided to include it because why the fuck not.
Yeah, I liked that. If this was coming from the yuri manga tradition, it would probably be about how sad it was they never got to experience a more adult love. Here the relationship was already basically emotionally complete and the fact that in a few years they'd have been making out is more of a spice. Even though the 18-year-old Sora is devastated that she didn't tell Iroha she was in love with her too, or that's how I understood that scene anyway.

>Maybe it affected the story
There are some hints that Iroha was going to do something darker, like Shinobu defining "ai" as pure, unselfish love and "koi" as love where you want something from the other over a picture of Iroha, and Shimon telling Iroha her trying to avert Sora's death could end up hurting others.

Well, now the first one just reads as Shinobu being a little bitter about losing the Sorabowl and Iroha just being that good.
