It was shit as soon as the GBC came out and both were blown out of the water by GBA.

On a hardware level it was pretty well designed for its time and purpose. The game library is pretty bad though, especially considering the lifespan of the system.

I beat Wario World 3 eventually, it great at the time. Played on switch it doesn't hold up.
Would sometimes beat Super Mario Land on long road trips to holiday destinations, occasionally won Tetris.
Zelda Oracle of seasons was pretty good, but i couldn't figure out how to progress & we didn't have the internet. Searched every location, interacted with all the stuff..

Final memory of the device was leveling on Pokemon Crystal in bed at night, with a special Gameboy light.
Had Jurassic Park but it was dino-poop

I unironically had a gameboy and I liked torpedo range. I also had the tarzan game but I didn't like that one as much lol.

Castlevania 2 (By SOTN's director)
DK 94
Links Awakening (By takashi Tezuka)
Ninja Gaiden (by natsume)
For the Frog the Bell Tolls (By the director of OOT)

These alone make it their best handheld.

It's a lot like the N64 by now that most people have no fucking idea how its games actually looked and ran like thanks to mass emulation. The difference, of course, is some people *did* realize it was crap and then the Super Game Boy happened.

in a world of AA batteries what more could you expect? wasn't just the gameboy either, EVERYTHING needed batteries back then.

many of the games are still objectively good
>links awakening
>pokemon
>SML1+2
>Warioland
>Metroid II
>Harvest Moon
>kirby

many of these had sequels that got much better, especially on GBA. I went back and played Warioland 4 on my analog pocket and it holds up really well honestly. the gameboy formula lasted a really long time. we got the DS+3DS which had some really good titles but it was looking more and more like handhelds would just go away. they tried their best to experiment with social ideas to make it worth carrying around a 3DS but the writing was on the wall largely.

most parents now as early as 6 park their kids in front of a kid friendly amazon tablet/device and call it a day because the world has gone fucking insane.

It's a toy. It was never meant to be anything more than a toy. Something you fiddle with for an hour a week and enjoy as a 12 year old, not something to keep you glued to your screen for weeks at a time.

It was made for a time when kids were still expected to go play outside fuckin, wherever, and be home before dark, not ipad babysitted for 18 hours a day.

I bet a $99 full of good games like it would do very well on today's world.

The blur was was pretty fucking epic, you would be basically calculating where your jump was going to land based on a fucked up delay, even non time sensitive games would suffer from text turning to shit and having to refresh lol. Like everyone who was also there in-era has said though, it was better than not playing videogames
