While haptic feedback is cool, the Dualsense has dogshit battery life and d-pad. Also no extra back buttons is a huge L. I can't go back to controllers without at least 2 back buttons for mapping things like Dodge and spell change for Elden Ring. I hope Nintendo's Switch 2 controller coming with two backpaddles will set the standard for controllers in the future, because, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo adopting extra buttons would create a new standard for games to have more controller inputs.

I just want a wireless controller with back buttons that can be freely macro'd to keyboard inputs or whatever I want (as opposed to, like, only buttons that are already on the controller itself), has gyro, and works on PC, Android and Switch without needing a USB dongle. What's my cheapest option?

The controller in the op can rebind back buttons to keyboard inputs thanks to native steam input support. It'll work with Android through Bluetooth and the included USBC dongle. No switch support, you'll have to shell out extra for a Switch dongle for that. Avoid the "Bluetooth" version marketed for Switch like the plague, it actually doesn't work with the Switch 2, has worse latency/polling rate, and no steam input (possibly ever).

8bitdo build quality is actually really good, but you only ever hear about the edge cases online. First party controllers aren't scrutinized anywhere near the same extent, people just assume they're good by default and blame bad luck if they get a lemon.
My 8bitdo Pro 2 and M30 have been solid for 2+ years with near daily use on my Mister retro set up, and I'm looking forward to the N64 controller (though I wish it came in Atomic Purple).

It has two back buttons and two extra shoulder buttons that aren't obtrusive because you need to press them with your fingertips. Honestly it's a lot more practical than controllers with four back buttons. I love my steam deck, but honestly I only ever use the top two back buttons to bind L1 and R1, because the thing is too big to reach those buttons and the bottom back buttons comfortably.

Honestly, this is how I would describe it. The sticks are good, the buttons are good, the d-pad is kinda bad, and the build quality feels kinda cheap overall. Still a good controller for the price and at least the sticks won't drift.

It's actually really good for fighting games, you get a soft tactile click for every input. People rate it harshly because the shape suggest it'll be a cross gate d-pad like the Super Nintendo controller where diagonals are harder to press rather than a radial d-pad that rolls around easily like the Series X dish or Saturn pad.

the only (very minor) things i dont like about 8bd controllers is they run a bit a small and i accidentally hit the underside buttons pretty easily.
the only first party controller i'll buy anymore is dual sense because it's a bit bigger and with steaminput the touchpad can be highly functional. battery life is of no concern to me since i leave all controllers permanently plugged in.
i had a red series x controller i really liked until it nearly died to a game as simple as forza. both sticks became loose and the dpad got weird where if i clicked left (as the series x dpad is super clicky) it would act as if being held down.

I'd be interested if those extra face buttons were in the top right instead of down where the meat of my thumb would be. Why there are no good dual stick six button face controllers boggles my mind, The layout has a niche for fighting games, even though TECHNICALLY shoulder buttons for strong punch and strong kick are better.

The series x controller has some kinda alloy domes that snap back into place after you depress them. My guess is you mashed left too hard or dropped the controller and the force bent a crease in the dome.

Lol
The only real advancement is that modern games usually (but not always) support both protocols now. Both of them are extremely outdated and Microsoft has no interest in trying to fix that for whatever reason.
Steam Input would be the end-all be-all of input APIs if it didn't require you to run everything through Steam. Valve should really just turn it into a standalone thing like they did with Steam VR.

The main benefit of steam input is remapping the controller through the steam client. What you're asking for is some kinda lightweight steam client just for controllers so you don't have to boot shortcuts of games from other clients through steam proper.

>the flydigi software doesn't let you map keyboard combinations to the back buttons, only single key presses(at least on the vader 4)
>Vader 4 didn't even come with alternate d-pads or thumb sticks yet plenty of other manufacturers do

It's like each manufacturer only gets a limited amount of boxes they can check off so they always have to leave features missing. >Name a better controller for PC, I dare you.
Any console controller. Ideally Xbox if you're on Windows, but Playstation and Switch work just fine too, specially on Linux and Mac as the drivers are included in the Kernel.

3rd party controllers work for most part but I always tend to eventually find some annoying issue, so I completely stopped using them.
