Humans just want to see humans in their fantasies. Either for relatability or self-insertion. DNA itself could be a limiting factor in how we evolved and we can't know until we study something else, or build up enough evidence that something else doesn't exist.

Germanium based life is possible, but we have reasons to expect it'd be very rare. The same applies to your silicon life.
The issue is that at higher atomic weights, everything needs more energy and is more unstable.
As such, even if silicon based life eventually is more common, carbon based probably arises much sooner/quicker.

Maybe every alien race has already gone through this. Turns out living on one billion inhospitable space rocks just isn't as appealing when you can do it.
>>712397560What? No.
We make guesswork based on what we have, sure. But we don't make hard statements like "only carbon based life can exist" because we also don't have evidence thats true either.
Xenobiology, is all speculative. There is no evidence for anything in any direction. But there are a lot of popsci authors and people who don't understand either evolution or biology making very confident statements that they cannot back up. That is my issue. Especially when it trickles down to people who just repeat it because they don't even understand that very tiny amount of evidence those popsci authors do have.
>>712397569Most flaws in the human body are a trade off for bipedalism. And there's a million different theories about what encouraged the large brain growth. We probably would not be intelligent if the specific pressures of savannah living, tribal communities, communal hunting, communication, social pressures, throwing objects, cooking meat, and a hundred other things weren't all simultaneously pressuring us. But there's no telling that a different body plan couldn't do it too, under different circumstances. We have several strong candidates for animals on earth with very different bodies to have intelligence on par with at least a toddler, which, if we weren't around, could easily evolve to be intelligent.

And the problem is that, at least based on ourselves, civilizations are not monoliths. So maybe most of the civilization gets over the colonization craze and gives up on it, but one group of weirdos keeps on with it. A few million years later that split group now owns most of the galaxy.

These alternative bases for biochemistry have been widely criticized and proven unreliable in numerous studies. It took me just 10 minutes to find and read such a paper on silicon based life (hint for finding it: the author's name is Petkowski and it was published in 2020 in Life)

>crabsDo you see any crabs with a k class reproductive strategy?
>>712402807>Best he can do is imagine earth animal body plans>3 or 5 limbed species are "strange" is best he can come up withBro, we don't even know the consequences of what a non-bilateral symmetrical animal might be, because there are so few on earth. We can make a lot of guesses based on our own chemistry about efficiency, but at the end of the day the human body plan is a very specific adaptation that really only worked because we were tree dwelling primates that evolved bipedalism to function when the climate shifted from forest to savannah. And it worked almost entirely because the adaptation to our shoulders that let us swing in trees also, by chance, let us throw shit good, which also only worked because the tree swinging already gave us thumbs to grip things we were throwing.
You are expecting the exact same chain of coincidences, which I have simplified to an embarrassing degree, to occur again in another species in order for your fantasy of convergent evolution to work.
We have witnessed, on Earth, several other body plans that have given rise to fairly significant intelligence. Given the right pressures, anything from cephalopods to corvids to elephants to both whales and dolphins. Yes the marine animals will have trouble with tool use, but we're talking purely intelligence here.
>>712388726 (OP)>fantasy or science fiction game is completely centered around humanity>humans are the youngest or most inexperienced but still can beat alien empires, demons or ancient monsters despite the gap in technology and powerThere is nothing wrong with these, although there is more to humanity than just the military.
>>712403860All of those things would only work if their biology is so similar to ours the only conclusion would be someone seeded both planets. Which, to be fair, a lot of scifi also has and doesn't address. And the fact that a lot of scifi also has interbreeding means they're also ignoring this incredible coincidence.
Anything alien shouldn't even be using what you'd call "DNA" in the first place. It would be a different protein combination entirely.
>>712405482>because there are so few on earthAnd you dont think there's a reason for that?

>>712410485As strange as it sounds Lovecraft probably did the best representation of aliens as far as I'm concerned. The Old Ones, Yithians, Mi-Go. All pretty unique.
>>712394657I thought the depiction of humans in ME1 was perfect, but then after that in ME2 humanity goes to #1 main character. After the giant terminator fight I gave up on the story and haven't even played 3.

Anyone have actually good science fiction smut? I'm getting kind of sick of everything hovering prudishly at the edge, like the authors have fucking AI restrictions or something. But then, at the same time, most actual porn is too comically direct for me to really enjoy either.
What do you call it when it's porn, but it also has a good plot? Romance?
I think there should be much more science fiction romance, but romance where it also graphically describes sheep aliens climaxing from getting fucked hard in the ass.
There's no romance in porn anymore.
>>712411798Potentially, but having a species that isn't limited to just a single world of its birth and is already space-capable would give humanity an overall edge in numbers and versatility.
Though having a primitive race of actual orcs look up to offer its warriors to ascend to the great gods' war in the skies would be a pretty novel idea for the race in question.
Realistically, it wouldn't matter. No shock-troop armor is perfect and its easier to make bigger guns than better armor. Humans wouldn't be great warriors, but pretty damn good manual laborers and hazard specialists in a galaxy where everyone else is a decent bit more fragile. Heck, a human officer of the law would be amazingly effective on multi-species shared grounds. It would be akin to getting pulled over by a 6'7" muscleman in SWAT gear for speeding.

>>712412229Exactly
The problem with HFY isn't it's premise, because I think exploring the biology and anthropology aspects of humanity in the context of an alien community is an interesting idea, even as a power fantasy. The real problem with HFY as a genre is that it's piloted entirely by amateur writers, and as a result for every one of the stories that's interesting or well done there's another fifty which are just pure schlock
It's less about it being a power fantasy and more about being a completely masturbatory, low quality, genre-incestuous power fantasy
>>712397519The very first race to become spacefarers are a herbivore octopus-like race. The first sentient life form they came across was a herbivore golden retriever-like race. Itโs a lot more complex than that, but long story short, that made the squid people and dog people determine that all herbivore races are normal, while all carnivorous and omnivorous races are diseased. They even culled all predatory animals on their native planets.
The squid and dog people would make an intergalactic alliance and secretly โcureโ all other races from their โpredatoryโ tendencies. Yes, even herbivores who showed any hint of violence, like the sheep race in the OP pic, were labeled โpredatoryโ due to essentially being headbutting bipedal rams on steroids, and were experimented on to have them become docile cowards.
The sheep guy in the OP pic was captured by the octopus race president, essentially the big bad of the series, and the sheep guy was experimented on to turn him into a completely docile vegetable.

>>712412485Romance and smut are extremely hard to weave together, an issue that's compounded badly by the fact that gayshit isn't romantic at all
>>712413270I just like a couple of chapters of buildup, and some plot going on. But I like a smut interludes. Modern stuff is either way to chaste, or way too direct and low-brow. A nice weaving of both is nice. Alfie might be the only example readily coming to mind, /tg/ relevant.

>>712397249I've always kinda wondered why there's never any stories where humans are one of the eldest races greeting newcomers to the galaxy. Humans being elves even fits better with sci-fi protagonists being able to get along with, unite, and even lead every race.

If I'll be honest anons, the most probable sci-fi scenario where humans coexist with alien, but humanoid, lifeforms is Space Station 13. I just have this notion where bipedal aliens with human-like intelligence, spaience and sentience are the most successful species wherever they come from.

>>712415101My man
On the Fringes sets the standard of viper fics to which most others fail to live up to.
>>712421198Writers and the audience prefer underdog tales, and humans being young and naive can just as well serve to reason why they opt to get along with everyone because they don't know better, more Tau and Eldar. It's also just the case of it being the usual setup, and most people don't deviate from what's standardized in a genre of fantasy.

>>712388726 (OP)In 40k humanity is a middle age empire. The oldest empire is the Necrons, with the Eldar being younger, but the Tau have only been a space faring empire for a few centuries as opposed to humanity which has been in space for many millennia and is constantly battling against its own decay. They were the alien invaders snuffing out intelligent life wherever they found it and setting up human colonies to replace it, and now the empire is old, bloated, technologically stagnant, and in constant fear of being unable to defend itself from a number of crises that could lead to an exctinction level event for the species.
Star Wars is also a franchise that portrays humans as being an ancient race of space travelers. They're the most common intelligent species in the galaxy, can be found on most known planets, and collectively held the largest plurality of any interest group with in the senate. They've been a space faring species for so long that nobody even remembers what their real home planet was and it's essentially lost to time. It was earth. The space time phenomena that brought humans to the Star Wars galaxy sent them to thousands of years into past with space age technology.
>>712422997I thought they were abducted from earth and used as slave labor by ancient aliens in their home galaxy. At least that's what it implied in KOTOR and KOTOR 2.

>>712422551This movie was so fucking dumb
In the book it turns out Gort (the robot) is actually in charge and humanity passed the test because the scientists take klaatu back to the ship to heal him after he gets shot.
The robots are basically space cops who wipe out any species that is too warlike, but also inderstand the actions of a handful of people shouldn't doom an entire species

One thing that's annoying in xenofiction and retarded posts here is when the aliens are like
>We're all herbivores, pacifists, etc, humans are UNIQUELY the bad guys
Do dogs not exist?
Do dolphins not exist? They gang-rape other fish to death for fun when high on drugs as a completely normal and expected activity.
Etc etc
They turn "Earth" into "Just humanity", which is fucking retarded when they're supposed to be smart enough to casually fly through space
>>712415621Many simians that are generally considered less advanced are definitely better than some which are considered human.

>>712430698Do they pray in the direction of the holy planet as well? Do they fuck goats?
>>712430829>aliens are all MuslimOh no...
>>712427896That's a symptom of writers designing cultures/races wearing a single hat, ridding of any nuances. Plus, conjecture that an intelligent race of [X] would act like, such as the notion that a race of herbivores would be nice as the default. They're not, and wouldn't be because of ingrained trauma from predators on their planet and competition with other flocks over farm land.
>>712431008Its especially retarded when the alien race is just
>X human species>+HumanOut of the Dark had the main aliens be wolf men with a 'pack' mentality universally... because the author thought wolves work like that (a long discredited theory; they're a family unit) and acting like humans caring about family and fighting in anger is completely incomprehensible.
At no point do they look at the actual dogs on the planet or any other animal that does the same thing.
Just 100% humans are all that exist on earth, wooo humanity
