basically capcom has never had any kind of real overarching vision for the series and its identity, so when they hit on something that works they try to double down on it as much as possible, until it stops working, then when they pivot they throw the baby out with the bathwater and start doubling down on whatever the new thing is. eventually it'll happen to this 1st person stalker enemy outlast-lite incarnation of resident evil, and something else will take its place for a decade or so

resident evil 4 was hybrid actiony as they had gotten tired of pure survival horror puzzle solving halfway through development.
resident evil 5 had to be remade close to release due to africa controversy.
resident evil 6 was them acting like 5 was not remade so they just made the same game, and added a shit ton of fan service, what with all the most loved characters being playable and having moments with each other. amazing coop games both of them.
resident evil revelations were spin offs for handhelds and they did amazing as well.
resident evil 7 went back to survival horror puzzle solving.
resident evil 8 was being made as action in case 7 flops and since it didnt, 8 became this hybrid game like 4 again.
it just feels like a long time cause of the long development cycles. compared to 3 games per 2 years during ps1 and ps2 era. only hiccup here is resident evil 5. that africa controversy almost made them bankrupt. a single bad game brought them close to death. no wonder they are so scared of causing controversies with no names on the internet.

One of the most important games in the series, but one which nobody ever mentions, is Revelations 2. The positive critical response to that game basically dictated the future of the series from 2015 onward. Most staff involved with Revelations 2 are now in leading roles for the Resident Evil franchise. RE4 Remake basically plays exactly like Revelations 2.

RE7 saved the franchise in terms of public recognition but Revelations 2 is where the creative team found their footing and decided to continue in that direction. It is an extremely good game.

6 was panned by both critics and players, and the games went on a hiatus, the Anderson movies ended, REmake HD was a success, indicating to Capcom that maybe people liked RE that leaned more into survival horror (paving the way for REVII and REmake 2), Revelations 2 was a weird sort of “missing link” game between the RE4-6 era, and the REVII-current era.

this is basically what i want also, the last mainline entry i bought was 4 and 5. 6 i played at my friends house and it seemed retarded. 7 and 8 didnt interest me. i went back and played some of the older games and play revelations 2 and only played the raid mode. i never played the campaign. i put a lot of time in after seeing the gameplay on youtube. had a of fun. i also played outbreak file 2 and enjoyed that.

i think at this point because the plot and the story is so retarded, people just want cool looking characters and cool levels and cool enemies and dont care anymore about the plot an just want good gameplay that isnt linked to the story any more. none of the new characters they make are as good as the old ones. and all of the older characters are going to be like 50 soon because capcom insists on moving forward in the timeline instead of doing small side mission stories that could take place earlier.

i would have bought resident evil 4 remake if they had included DLC maps for mercenaries mode, but because it only had the maps from the base game and the base game mercenaries mode looks better than re4 remakes mercenaries mode i just still play the original.
