This is how you do reflections without killing the FPS.
You wanna know what's even better. Unreal engine slop can't even do this because unreal engine wouldn't be able to render the translucent flaw. it forces Deffered rendering which is so incredibly shit it cant render transparency.

Dead things do not have a reflection. A reflection is a vision into the demon world where your soul is partially tethered. Once you die your soul is released and no longer appears as a reflection. It's why vampires have no reflection either.

Not good enough, if you want minor reflections it needs to tank performance into the ground with patented tech, so you need to run the game at sub hd resolutions and then use the patented other tech to upscale and use the other patented tech to simulate extra frames.
Now that is the true gamer experience!
Praise be to nvidia!

Reflection works well enough to achieve the effect and no one complained back then.
Way before people tried justifying 1500 dollar videocards and calling anyone that didn't need "realistic" reflections or disliked the huge performance hit as simply being poor.

Absolute soul. The difference is this takes effort. The artists need to make all of those reflection sprites, and the level designers need to painstakingly place them all, and rigorously test so there's no weird stray ones. Compared to modern lighting systems, where you open your engine settings and tick the box that says "advanced lighting and reflections". Maybe move a few sliders and bang, perfect realistic lighting that only halves the FPS and only has a few artefact glitches... unless of course you're running on less than ultra, or on console, then the reflections will just not work properly and make the whole game look like shit.

What I liked about old games is how every developer had different solutions for overcoming the limtation, so every game always had its own visual style. On top of that, some devs would produce some absolute wizardry and you'd end up with games that looked 5x better than any other at the time. Now you just get realistic shooter, with varying degrees of realism.
