The communication system in GoA is actually the best the series has ever been, but I don't like getting a menu every time you talk. They could've just did it the same way RF4 did things. i.e. approaching a character and pressing a button brings up their dialogue box, and finishing what they had to say ends the dialogue box. But while the dialog box is active, you have the option to open up the more elaborate communication menu if you want to.

I like GoA's system. But it does need a bit of tweaking. On top of what you already said, I'd say make their current list of activities to do only be the one that makes sense to be available in the current area they're in (so no suddenly warping to the beach when you're in bumfuck antarctic snow land). This would bring back and incentivize a follower mechanic of sorts. So you want to go on a beach date? Actually take them to a place with a nearby beach. You wanna get hammered with someone? Actually drag their ass to a town with a pub first.

The tons of party banter is nice, but I actually want to normally talk to my party members while out on the field.

use your fire sword on a crop instead of harvesting it and sometimes the seeds you get will be 1 level higher than the crop you planted. Also when you ship a higher level crop (not a seed, the crop itself) stores that sell seeds will match the highest level of that crop you shipped
Some villagers say they can give higher level seeds but I wouldn't trust them to actually work on the crop you want.
