I played this one as a kid and didn't really touch the series for a while after that. More recently I was at a friends place and we played MK8 and I kept getting my ass kicked because I thought you still had to snake.

Serious question: how do you do snaking without hurting your wrist?

I don't miss snaking at all. I could do it just fine, but basically every race turned into "whoever misses one mini turbo loses."

Online was novel, but it's still bizarre that you could only pick half the courses. There's a mod that lets you pick all of them, and I remember people using cheats to pick other courses too.

Mario kart ds was just perfect tightly designed mario kart game. double dash plays soo slippery and loose, 8 plays too safe, fair and boring, 7 plays too slow and sterile even at 150cc and wii plays too chaotic and frantic in a unfun way. I went through the pain of beating Mirror Mode All Cup Tour, it controls like crap. What kind of retarded thoughts come into someone's head to make drifting easier than just turning to the left or right? It's the most ridiculous design decision ever. Trying to dodge obstacles on a straightaway is somehow hard as shit because if you turn too little, you get hit, but if you want to actually avoid getting hit you lose control. But somehow, it's easier to dodge that shit while drifting through tight turns in Rainbow Road or DK Mountain. It'd be like if wavedashing was easier than just walking in Melee, or if doing a shoryuken was easier than just doing a normal punch in a fighting game. It makes no god damn sense.

It's honestly really hard for me to decide what the best game in the series is. 8 is pretty much a better version of 7, Wii is a better version of Double Dash and the original game is a better version of Super Circuit. The various games feel distinct enough to me beyond those similar entries that I genuinely can't choose a favorite. I just like Mario cars that much, apparently.
DS absolutely has the best side content, though. It's a crime that mission mode hasn't shown up again since.
I still haven't played the new game yet since I don't own a Switch 2, but I think they missed a huge opportunity to bring missions back. It would work perfectly with the sort of open world thing they did in that game, I would think.

I grew up with 64 and love it, but there's a lot wrong with it. The physics are so fucked up the lightest karts have the highest top speed. "We can't run Grand Prix with 4 players so let's just spawn a bunch of mini-bombs in VS mode instead" was pretty shitty too. Grand Prix was also piss easy compared to, say, Double Dash. There's also not a lot of content compared to later games.

It's a good game with charming aesthetic flourishes and tricks but not a masterpiece, just the first 4 player kart racer people got their hands on
