MGS4 is 17 years old today (fuck Iโ€™m old). How do we feel about it nowadays? I still love it despite what faggots say.

Made me lose respect for the MGS franchise. Before this people believed Kojima was a genius 100% unironically, 4 kind of exposed him as a half-hack that makes shit up along the way

Jesus christ. I beat the first 4 games again a few years ago and once again, I wished 4 didnt have the broken up levels. It just doesn't flow as well as the other games, and the cool parts are just too brief. Way too much padding and exposition, but he was trying to wrap things up so I get it. Still one of the best last boss fights in history

Haven't played it in a while, but my opinions about it basically changed with every replay.
And I did in fact replay it. So, it wasn't that bad, though it may have included skipping a lot of cutscenes.
The gameplay was stellar when it actually happened. I liked some chapters a lot more than most people, it seems. Chapter 3 has awful lore-dumps, a very awkward driving section and the boss fight was meh. But the actual sneaking and shadowing was really cool. People seemed to hate this part, too, but it's one of the most pure stealth sections of the whole game.
Chapter 4 (Shadow Moses) was pure nostalgia-bait - in a good way. Finding the SOCOM, equipping it and pulling it out, Snake muttering these words. Great job, Kojima. Also, sneaking past these robots was a good change of pace.
MGS4 overall has some really high heights but also some terrible lows. And the cutscene to gameplay ratio is awful. That really holds it back. Though, I also have a soft-spot for Old Snake.

Holy fippy bippy.

MGS 4 raped the series beyond the point of no return in terms of plot. And as if that wasn't bad enough, it was a bad game.

I'm amazed Kojima is still revered as this auteur even though he made 4. It's a uniquely unpleasent experience as a game and a story. I don't think its an exaggeration to call it one of the worst games ever made, certainly that I've played.

i love it but the gameplay sections are a little bit too short. if you skip all cutscenes, the game can be beat in around 3 hours. a large portion of that time is because of the on rails car sections that you can't speed up.

Best game in the series. The more insane Kojima gets and the more he pisses nerds off the better the game is. Cutscenes should have been 10 times longer and more insane to piss off even more nerds, angry about their toys. You know Kojima even talked about being frustrated that snake has become a toy of nerds and draws analogies between soldiers being used by governments and politicians

i like mgs4 but that isn't true. if you like modern controls and design, MGSV is leagues ahead. if you like something a little more unique with lots of little personalized details of who different elements interact within a game, mgs3 plays the best.

the first two chapters of 4 had good design. the third chapter, in europe, was abysmal. fun idea, poor execution. chapter 4, shadow moses, was kind of neat but also did not have enough dynamic enemies save for the odd gekko. most of the level is rolling over and crawling under the laser sensors of the dwarf gekkos. chapter 5 has the best sneaking section in the game, but it is only a single room as the entire chapter is only 3 rooms (atop arsenal, screaming mantis fight, revolver ocelot fight).

>the third chapter
Act 3 had huge signs of "we had a lot of ideas for this area, but none of it came to be."
They wanted the octocamo mask to play a big part in an espionage/detective chapter where you concealed your identity and talked to people to get leads on the location of the rebel base while you shook the three gekkos in a trenchcoat off your trail. Then they cut it all the way down to walking behind the whistling guy for a couple minutes. There are entire map areas that you NEVER visit (on any difficulty) if you just follow the guy.

Looking back, the game was probably only five hours long without the cutscenes
>ch1, maybe 2 hours? bit of an anticlimax at the end and the frog fight sucked ass
>ch2, best part of the game IMO, a few hours at most, tank section, great boss fight in the hut.
>ch3, literally half an hour
>ch4: maybe two hours? Most boss fights of any chapter
>ch5: you get to the bridge after the mantis fight and it's game over. Everything after is scripted. The mantis fight was pretty much the final boss.

between all the bullshit he came out with in that game, I still find the direction change of the AI the most insulting, I guess "war economy" was easier to deal with than "info war" but then that idiot did it again with 5 when "words that kill" are literally a fucking vocabulary based parasite that kills, don't go into the propaganda aspect and double think if you can't even remotely deliver on it.

oh you see he is a genius, Big Boss not actually going nuclear and just being made up by the patriots was intentional, he didn't explain it and you don't get it, even if he went out of his way to bring back a comedy character and carefully detail why his diarrhea was a plot device against nanomachines.

Last real MGS. True boss unit, levels made to stealth. It goes overboard in tying up every lose end and is overindulgent with cutscenes, but some of them are incredibly entertaining. Best final boss of the series, and one of the best in video games in general. Last time MGO was fun.
I love it. Naysayers can say whatever they want about it being a movie but the only chapter that comes remotely close to this is Chapter 3. Every other chapter has a decent cutscene to gameplay ratio.
