>Microsoft's own Xbox handheld was reportedly "sidelined" recently, and I've heard from insiders that it's essentially canceled as the company focuses on Xbox's new software platform. I still think we'll see next-gen Xbox hardware from Microsoft, but I also strongly believe we'll see multiple devices from PC makers like Asus that will also be considered next-gen Xbox consoles.

Xbox didn't even get through 2 gens before shooting itself in the foot, and its been obviously declining in quality since the NXE update on the Xbox 360. Its a shame that they fumbled it so hard, but it will not be missed.

Microsoft doesn't care about gaming on desktop, because they don't have to. All the OEMs buy Intel CPUs, Nvidia GPUs, and Windows OSes for that segment.

Handhelds are another matter because Microsoft just can't slim their platform down enough to fit into them. Just like they couldn't slim it down enough to fit into the low power netbook segment that ultimately got taken over by a Gentoo based Linux distribution from Google.

This was obvious for years. Ill say it again. The next Xbox is going to be a Windows PC that boots right into the Xbox OS. It will fall in line with the "This is an Xbox" thing too. The Microsoft Surface will be "for business" Xbox will be "for gaming". They'll also license the Xbox name out to other OEMs and ROG Ally is the first one to get it. You'll start seeing "Xbox Ready" laptops and PCs (or whatever they want to call it) which will be devices that meet the minimum requirements for Microsoft to classify them as OK for playing Xbox games on.

The next Xbox is going to be a "console/PC hybrid". Called this shit a while ago.

lmao wtf. No, whatever was said in OPs post sounds like their step forward. They won't even make it a PC gaming brand, they're just going to develop that xbox app more and probably chage it into a fleshed-out service.

They still have corporate pc markets to rake in mad money, they aren't going to behave desperately like how you're painting it.

Looks bad.
Scrap it.
Use a phone, put sticks in the screen area. Have triggers under every finger, adaptive, half for one button, full for another. Only index finger triggers free of that.
Optional on screen DPAD, or invisible swipe up for up etc.

Face buttons never should have existed.
Triggers don't need to be big.
System should look like a phone, function as a phone. Stream from servers, personal or other consoles electing to serve. Or connect USB4 cables to a power bank and a system spec worn on the hip/thigh/armpit. Or spec too streamed in using wireless. Point being what is held looks like a phone. Passes as one. Looks good. All black or all white, no grey posing as silver.
Make calls with it. Use it in PC or android mode. Or phone OS. Easy software switch.
Waterproof.

Under no circumstances let it use Steam. Steam is degenerate anyone that uses it should be killed. Steam should be banned software on it.

Needs Xbox's 12bit colour.
Hall effect thumbsticks with different sensing mechanism and securing, not 2 point stupidity.

Encourage migration from Sony, Steam, Gog, Nintendo etc by offering the same games at a very small cost to buy for Xbox if proof of owning them on other platforms is made. PC versions are optimal, but not infected with steam. Punishing users for using steam possible too. As in if their payment system, credit, bank, has a history of selling humanity to steam then them banned from playing.

Specs can be larger than usual if worn on body, contoured, in parts, but can't use fans, unless fans detachable and aid body cooling. Preferably no heat sink either. Shouldn't protrude much. Worn under clothes.
Let users use PC versions. But have games tailored for use with the system to maximise battery life and looks. Eg extremely low res, DLSS.
3D screen. Gorilla glass. Comfortable to tap text on.

actually og and 360 were supposed to compete with sony's ps2 and ps3 allowing you to install linux and upgrade the system, which itself was a ploy to do tax evasion as a personal computer was not a luxury electronic and didnt get as much tax. once that eu law was revoked, playstation dropped linux, even though it did squat for piracy, and microsoft followed suit by gutting the internal team you are talking about.

It has been obvious for years now that Xbox was moving into a fully Netflix-like platform.
Now that they have seen the potential of PC handhelds and what Valve is doing with SteamOS, also with the increased adoption of linux, they are shitting their pants and have changed course a bit.
I guarantee their strategy will be the exact same as Valve's: "Console platforms" with licensing to hardware manufacturers and maybe a piece of haedware here and there.

>Actiblizz king deal has already paid itself off in revenue in 2024, turning any future revenue after operating costs into profit.

Why yes that is indeed how investing and acquisitions work. No amount of goal-post shifting will change the very real fact that MS has slingshot itself into a very strong (and growing) market position in gaming. It still remains to be seen just how long MS will keep their current momentum however. A game like South of Midnight doing poorly matters significantly less when its just another offering for a gamepass library that's being effectively subsidized almost entirely by Call of Duty at this point.

All of this if anything is just a smart pivot for the company. Microsoft has, and always will, suck fat shit at hardware manufacturing because they are at their very core a software company. Pivoting to a service + software approach (while letting actual manufacturers handle the hardware for them) is just the right approach even if they were doing better in the hardware business, cutting out that split in resources means more of those freed resources and budget can be put into things like developing a more gaming friendly version of Windows (like they're apparently doing with that Xbox Rog) I fully expect whatever is their next-gen Xbox to effectively be a home version of that Xbox Rog (that is to say, effectively a PC running a more gaming optimized version of Windows 11 designed to be easier to operate with a gamepad while offering the option to boot into full Windows 11 mode, giving the user the option to both play from the Xbox app, as well as any other launchers you might use to play games like Steam.) It will be interesting to see if the approach of finally allowing consumers to unify their "Xbox" and PC game libraries (or allowing typically console consumers to finally access a PC library) will be enough to finally push the needle in any way.

They appealed to bad natures concerned with appearance instead of accomplishment. People using max shit didn't seek to do anything. >Xbox makes money off of Game Pass
While technically game pass is profitable if you only look at the service itself but it definitely isn't profitable enough to cover the development cost of the games they put on there. At least not currently. If xbox sales were at least competitive with the ps5, game pass subs might actually be close enough to fund multiple AAA games a year but since it is looking like it would at least take 2 more gens at best to catch up back to sony, MS might just call it quits and focus on being the biggest game publisher in the world.

That will never happen because devs are still making their PC games for Windows, not Linux. The advantages SteamOS has over Windows right now are a better handheld/console-like experience, slightly better performance, and price. If Microsoft can fix their OS, then price will be the only advantage. Meanwhile, SteamOS still can't play many popular online games that normalfags love and there's also gamepass.

Here's the problem with that. The price, the price, the Price, the PRICE, THE PRICE! You cannot sell a handheld at $800+ and expect people to buy it when Valve makes one for just $400 and will make a successor for either $500 or $550. Xbox is dead, PlayStation will follow. You're incredibly delusional, retarded, or both if you think this garbage will sell, it's over, give up.

i figured microsoft's long term solution to killing xbox hardware would be to make an official compatibility layer that runs xbone and xbox series games on standard windows PCs. if they don't do this and just try to sell "play anywhere" windows ports of games as "xbox games", and devices that only run windows games as an "xbox", then obviously no one will care and it will bomb. people buy an xbox to play xbox games.
people are obviously unreceptive to the "this is an xbox" marketing and find it embarrassing, and microsoft should pull back on it. the xbox audience they have left is minuscule, i don't know why they're trying to spurn it completely.
every big company is chasing the same bag of establishing themselves as a game streaming platform to try to outlive consoles, but microsoft isn't being nearly as subtle about it as the competition. even if anyone who bought the last couple gens of xbox is really stupid, they deserve a LITTLE more respect from the fucking company that sells them.

Meh. Save for Halo, Xbox was never great and the only reason it became temporarily relevant was because sony shot itself in the foot with the PS3. Despite being a huge Halo fan I never really managed to convince myself to buy an xbox console ever.

If the PS3 didn't get delayed and didn't have such a bad launch and first 2 years, the Xbox brand would've faded away long ago.

Xbox was unique in that it supported Direct X, the original console served a niche that PS2 could not. The Xbox 360 similarly did some really neat shit that no other console had done before, but they fucked it all up with the NXE update. Playstations big claim to fame was mostly being cheap to release games on, which Sony kinda ruined with the PS3

i can't even call it an elephant in the room or an unspoken giant or anything that valve, steam, and the steam deck already exist, because anybody with a shred of cognition from at least five years ago already knows all three of those things exist and microsoft is insanely jealous that they didn't have even a slight place in any of those things

Honestly, what do they even need a console for. We all thought they were buying all these companies to strengthen their position with exclusives. But they just wanted to go into the software business and live off gamepass.

I would once again like to mention that no one is currently making "handhelds" they are making portable consoles. You can't put a switch 2 or a steamdeck in your fucking pocket, and they're just running console games but at a lower resolution.

I miss when real handhelds were still a thing.

why would a POWERRRRRR brand suddenly start chasing the type of now-niche shit occupied by random arduino projects and the playdate? unfortunately handhelds as we knew them are pretty well obsolete, the first switch does represent not only a pretty damn big graphical leap over the 3DS but a pretty similar leap to the 3DS itself over the DS, we can trace an ancestral line from the game boy to switch as "portable NES," "portable SNES," "portable N64", "portable gamecube", "portable wii/wii u"

That's not a problem but a positive; if they can't or deny to compete and drop good games they can go to hell, which is what they have been receiving for going to graphicwhore "consoles" and not droping good games.

Mind you, Nintendo games aren't bulletproof and if you fail measuring up againts those you deserve the L. So let's keep first game on Nintendo consoles because literal retards buy Mortal Kombat on Nintendo after the 7th generation, ports like those deserve nothing but the middle finger.

That's why the Steam Deck exists, they make their games for that and eventually the Steam Deck 2 but be forewarned, it's better to not go for PS6-level stuff and use UDNA at its fullest. RDNA 3.5+ is a good stop gap. Those who chooses to go beyond the Switch 2 and Steam Deck 2 in power will fall. This is why the future is indies and AAs because AAA can't help themselves.

I hate him more because he couldn't even kill the Xbox like Sega killed their consoles, it was a slow painful death and unlike the Dreamcast, where Sega actually tried, Microsoft didn't even try to save the Xbox with the Xbox Series consoles. Mattrick killed Xbox. Phil has been trying to move people to Game Pass, but nothing they do is working. MS' original goal was to become the only (or at least primary) multimedia device in the family living room (which is why the XB1 is called the 'Xbox One' - MS legitimately thought it would be the only device you'd have, so it would be Input #1 to your TV), but completely botched every aspect of it for various reasons.

And because they're so thoroughly bureaucratic, jeeted, and inefficient, their internal dev teams have only ever delivered trash.

Technically Xbox isn't M$'s first attempt at a console. They had a box called the MSX Home Computer designed for the Far East in 1983, difference is they weren't manufacturing the hardware themselves but they did create a hardware standard that other manufacturers would use to make the system.

Funnily enough that console also only lasted 4 gens before getting discontinued.

This is Bomberman from 1983

>This right here and I stopped caring about Sony when Uncharted and The Last of Us became their face. I knew it was over for both and neither ever recovered.
Based, I actually did the same.
Xbox 360 for the first year or so of the gen is the last time Xbox has been good and I think the PSP is basically the last good system Sony has ever made.
I was initially somewhat interested in Last of Us, but completely lost faith in Sony after not only seeing how much they lied about the game before release, but how it was praised as the best game ever made because it was just like watching a movie. Playstation effectively stopped having value after the PSP died and Sony gave up entirely on their quirky AA games that gave the platform so much character. I still can't believe they came out a few years ago and said "the problem is we make too many games, we need to make less games but with much bigger budgets!"
Playstation and Xbox have been zombie brands for like 3 gens in a row now, which is why the only real hype reveals they ever seem to have are remakes for 4+ gens ago.
