What is couched in the use of the word “ugly” is frustration that itagaki doesn’t abide by common tropes and aesthetics of the anime style (with big quotation marks).
Characters aren’t bishie. They aren’t made excessively cool. The author is interested in portraying an entirely different concept: strength.
A lot is sacrificed in this quest. But I’d argue a lot is gained too.
It’s moronic to call something ugly with nothing backing it up. The arguments are all surface level, facile, gauche.
Detractors have neither given a good, grounded argument for why Baki as a work is bad/ugly art, nor have they given a good example of what good/pretty art looks like.
