I finished the game today and I have mixed feelings
Act 1 was ludo kino deluxe and it sat the bar so high I was literally dreaming about what would happen next
Once it got revealed that it was just a family feud and basically a dream world I got severely disappointed and I was sure that Gustave would come back, either as the evil mastermind behind it all or returning to save the party from certain doom. That didn't happen either so the character just felt thrown away and underused. They managed to salvage it somewhat with Verso's ending, but I just felt the game had wasted a lot of potential.
Also, the skill trees could definitely use some work, you don't really need to max them out so you end up with a bunch of leftover points and abilities you don't really need to use (btw Monoco is fucking OP, love this nigga). And I experienced some weird bugs where when running it would stutter, the music would just randomly stop and the camera being wonky.

I give it a strong 8 out of 10

It's not though, and that's the big IQ filter I keep seeing with this game. The canvas world is a creation, yes, but the game spends hours and hours very clearly and deliberately showing you that everyone in it is very much a real person with free will and independent thought. Anyone who sees the twist and then just handwaves everything they've seen up to that point as "oh they're just made up lol" didn't understand it at all

The Dessendres have control over literal magic, anon. Aline created living, breathing people that have their own independent thoughts and desires, who can have children who are just as sapient. I am french and I can confirm that we have minitel running inside of nanochips (we call them petites chips) in order to enforce the control over this narrative.
We do not plan on controlling the world, we are only trying to teach the world what a good baguette is.

strongly agree. the thing about a protagonist in a game is that when you start the game, you undertake a quest with them. there's an emotional investment that exists.

when you kill my nigga Goose, that emotional investment doesn't magically transfer over to the pajeet scammer Verso or Maelle - I just lose interest. I'm not invested in the cast anymore or their story and I've lost a bit of interest in playing on.

I undertook the quest with Gustave not Verso. And the cheap we wuz game of thrones and shit writing for shock value doesn't make the game better

okay their bodies are frozen - doesn't prove there's magic.

for all we know, they could be highly immersed in a fantasy world of their imaginations (i.e. the paintings).

but sure, i'll humor you here. let's say they have magic. where's your proof that they're creating "real people"? nowhere does it say this - they could be similar to AI, able to act and sound like a human but with no feelings, thoughts or emotions of their own. A painted creation with no real sentience.

let me put it in a way that the average 4chinner can understand

Must be a different anon then.

Regardless, this kind of dives into the argument of human sentience. AI vs real people type of shit.

Not really going to go in depth here but the main idea is this - can you distinguish between a highly intelligent and realistic AI vs a real person?

Just because they look and act human doesn't mean they're capable of thinking, feeling, suffering, etc. It just means they look and *act* human.

We don't know if they aren't just "programmed" by the painter to act like humans or if they actually are. Given that the painted world is a fantasy metaphysical world conjured by the painters imagination, there's no real proof that the people there are 1) alive 2) sentient and not just highly realistic approximations of real life people. Passing the Turing test doesn't mean you're a real person (google turing test by the way - it dives deeper into the subject of distinguishing machine from human)

yeah and programmers don't write programs that bug out either lol.

machines can not work as intended either. in fact, even looking at AI, we've had countless issues with AI exhibiting "undesirable" behavior such as racism, mistaking black people for gorillas, thinking chinks forgot to open their eyes etc etc.

a creation not having the intended behavior does not prove anything. try again.

that argument applies whether they're "real" (i.e. your neighbor going on a shooting spree) or "fake" sentient (i.e. an AI uprising).

You're arguing semantics very poorly. Based on everything we know about the history of Lumiere, they have the same experience of their environment and the same inner world as you and me in our reality. Painting magic and shit, it works, and tracks with Aline being uniquely skilled.
This enhances the Greek tragedy-esque story, denying it detracts from it. Unless you really want to believe Renoir literally did nothing, there was no moral weight behind his actions at all.

End of Act 2 to Act 3 are basically a couple hours apart so all of that, basically everyone in the painted world isn't real outside of the people in the family feuding. It makes characters like Luna, Sciel, Gustave not really matter and they're thrown to the way side.

Never said they are. I'm pointing out that you're a moron for claiming they are capable of it. They pass the Turing test, but that doesn't mean you can think/feel/suffer.

>Okay, what's the value of that stament?
Is your IQ above 100 anon? But I'll humor you again.

I'm saying "we don't know" to mean that you don't have proof in your retarded claim. As in, you are claiming X but "we don't know" that X is true because nowhere does it say X or even hint at X. You are claiming that they are real people and there's no proof of that. They pass the Turing test but if that's all it takes to fool a retard then you might want to be wary of falling for AI bots on Tinder telling you they love you as well

I believe it is a wonderful plot device in exposing subhuman IQ individuals. Even when I played Star Ocean 3 at age 12 back in 04 and was hit with the twist, I could not imagine being mentally retarded enough to think:

>Wait...the Eternal Sphere isn't LE REEL!!!??? Fuck these characters I spent 50 hours with! Luther needs to kill (delete) everyone. They're just 0s and 1s anyway lmaooo

It's the same thing all over again with E33. A higher reality existing outside the main one inexplicably invalidates the existence of the player engages with due to some arbitrary and manufactured definition of what is "real." In a fucking video game.

not that anon but maybe the existence of the Lumina Converter points to the possibility that the painted creations of Lumiere could at some point match the powers of the painters?

Either way, they're stuck inside of the Canvas, and so long as the Painters have the ability to leave and erase the Canvas, they are lesser beings.

If someone with godlike powers can create, uncreate, or even recreate you from existence without repercussions, you are an inferior being and at their mercy.

But funny enough it's my friends who are atheists who get more upset about this twist than anyone else.

That's the least compelling argument presented, though the Lumierians are obviously real people in all the ways that matter.

Renoir could simply be delusional or trying to make himself feel less guilty about killing things that look like humans even though they aren't. If the player can be fooled by the Lumierians acting like humans why couldn't Renoir or any other Painter, they are obviously imperfect people.

>Just because they look and act human doesn't mean they're capable of thinking, feeling, suffering, etc. It just means they look and *act* human.
We don't understand enough about consciousness to know that for certain, or if it's even possible. For all we know consciousness might be an emergent property of complex systems like our brains. Would a simulated brain not experience simulated consciousness? If you simulate a person with all their detail of emotions and feelings and behaviors and responses, does consciousness not emerge from that simulated person just as it does for a real person? Is the philosophical zombie even possible? Or perhaps there is a necessary chemical element to it, or perhaps it ties in with the fabric of reality in some deeper way, in which case your simulated person is indeed unthinking and unfeeling. It's a deeply mysterious subject that nobody really understand a great deal about.

Stop being retarded. The game does not investigate the philosophical question of if Lumiereans are humans because it is obvious that they are in all the ways that matter, and any argument for it or against it is unfalsifiable. Aline made painted Verso for a reason: to recapture her son. Rather, it takes their humanity as a given and instead is about vying for power and control to make up for traumatic grief with the backdrop of the beauty of a painting.

All of the Lumerians are new puppets made by the new Aline. They are all 'cope puppets'. Alicia is doomed to continue the cycle. Alicia is living in a delusion, and dooming Verso's canvas and soul to eternal suffering. For all the love the family claims to have for him none of them seem too torn up over destroying his world.

Because there is no one to save. His world is a fantasy that he doesn't wish to participate in. Painted Verson wanted Verso's family to let him go and move on. He especially coudn't bear to see Alicia throw away her life after he gave his own to save her. Painted Verso has all of Verso's memories. He sacrificed his life a second time to save his little sister.

I disagree. Only because of the piece Verso's soul without it the canvas stops. So it would appear that the painters have to leave a piece of their souls in all the canvas worlds they make and that is the sacrifice that Renoir is eluding to the painters having to make to utilize the painter power. The world can only continue to go on if that soul is still painting it.

Persona just aped Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with Jotaro shooting himself in the cell to show off/summon his stand. You betray your limited world view and lack of experiences if the first thing you think of is persona, because it's doubtful E33 was referencing either rather than the hundreds of movies where someone contemplates suicide.

Is a Switch 2 thread not a shilled slop thread? What is there' to talk about? At least with expedition 33 there's SOME meat on the bone. Mario Kart doesn't really have any sort of lore to get stuck into, Yakuza 0 is ten years old, and Clubhouse games are just that.

Regardless of your shit opinion, Jojo did it first and Persona 3 was clearly referencing it. Like half the big names in the Japanese vidya industry are part of the same age cohort that read Shounen jump religiously in the late 80's and early/nod 90's, so they are strongly influenced by the things like Jojo, Ranma, Dr Slump and DBZ.

From the information present in the game, it doesn't appear as though the piece of a Painter's soul left in the Canvas has agency--in other words, it exists as a source or anchor that keeps the Canvas in place perpetually, rather than continually painting new things into the Canvas.
And because Verso's Canvas was made when he was a child, and he died when he was around his early 30s, we can assume that the soul left in the Canvas does not expire, or at least not fast enough to matter. These are still paintings, at the end of the day, so in one way you can consider it the fading of paint over time due to the environment, or as a world compare it to the entropy of our own universe.

The details are different, but fundamentally the Canvas is a world just like ours.

Verso was forced to kill the woman he loved, kill his family and watch his sister kill herself while knowing he only exists for the sake of gods who only gave him life and immortality for the sake of their selfish grieving process which he cannot escape unless he helps bring an end to the only world he knows.
By the end of the game the only family member he has left in some capicity is Maelle and if the world persist it'll come at the cost of her own life which is why at the end of Maelle you see the characters from his POV and when it comes to Maelle he can't help but feel sadness at how she's rotting away in her world for this world.

If I could I'd gouge out your eyes so that you'd never ever post again or participate in any online discussion again.
I am certain you only experienced this game through second hand accounts and not from actually playing the game. It's pretty fucking clear that the painted characters have internal monologues along with thoughts, feeling and agency that goes beyond what's required of them for the simulation.
You lack the intelligence for introspection or reflection.
Discussion with you is worthless but I will impart this point, I am glad that we as humans are mortal because it means you just like I will one day die.

When Gustave is rattled but encounters his first enemy. With this look of emptiness on his face he walks forward anyway, takes out his sword, and the music swells and then you're in your first fight. I thought the game was interesting up until then, but the way that entire scene was framed, directed, etc. hit me exactly the way great games do when you recognize, all of a sudden, that you're experiencing the real deal. And it only got better from there.

I think the problem is that the character writing is honestly kind of shit. Like Verso is a bad guy, and his party should recognize that, but just no time is spent on this. He has conversations with Renoir in front of lune, sciel, and maelle where they are obviously talking about something incredibly important, and he even alludes to Maelles importance, again, in front of them, and they just don't follow up at all.

Like, even at the end, when they kill the paintress, they are just so damn incurious about the whole thing and Verso's interactions with the paintress and Renoir. It's bizarre watching it. It really taints Lune and Sciel IMO, and they barely feel like characters or relevant to the story at all.

When the gameplay got me super hooked early on and I liked most of the characters, except that faggot verso later on, and the music got me to stop just to hear it. The world is very interesting and the gestrals are such fucking retarded creatures that I find them endearing. The plot twist was very meh and written poorly IMO but I'm hoping it's all one big setup to something greater that isn't just "haha nothing mattered it was all paint lmao you retard escapism BAD". But that's cope, I know they will double down on the misery porn and nothing will be ok.

Which sucks, because it emulates what I feel for the fromsoft NPCs nowadays because nothing matters and they all end up dead anyway. So in future clair obscur games I won't give a fuck about the party since I'll fully expect another NOTHING MATTERED AND PEOPLE DIE LMAO twist. Other than that, I did enjoy the actual video game part a lot. Square Enix can suck a cock for having their oldfag corporate retards say that no one wants to play turn based rpgs. I do think that both Verso AND Renour have writers on their side, if only because nobody is willing to call them out on their logical fallacies. And this makes the game weirdly stacked in their favour. Lune tries to confront Verso, but he just ignores her and she never brings it up again and later on Maelle tries to confront Renoir about his absolutist logic, but at that point the game itself is stacked against her, so no matter what argument she makes it it makes no difference.

It won't win GOTY because the jews won't allow it, it's too cheap, devs are white/straight, it doesn't tackle modern politics, no one is alphabet soup, and diversity goes no further than copy pasted black npcs. This game is a bad example for the industry corporations are trying to shape.

Because Alicia made it impossible.
You may think of her as Maelle, which is wrong, Maelle is gone at the end of act 2, Alicia in the canvas only has Maelle's memories, she's nothing alike, she wants control, lies to everyone, manipulates. She is Aline 2.0. In her ending she doesn't even restore Verso's painted family, she just tortures him, while controlling everyone to not bat an eye to it. Lune and Sciel would never just watch that willingly.
Verso tried to save everyone, he stuck together with Maelle even against his father, but the more you get into act 3, the more he realizes that erasing the canvas is the only way to save his sister from turning into a monster.

Sure, but at this point I felt like the game was taking Verso's side a bit too much, to the point I picked Maelle's ending out of sheer spite. Because I felt that you can't just dismiss all those complicated points Maelle just brought up with one simple "just get over it" and that's what I felt the game was trying to do with Verso's ending.

They created the studio specifically to make this game. Now they have nothing to follow up.
They got a unique combat system they can reuse but story wise it's gonna be hard not to fall into a pattern or be unpredictable

Smart man, but I genuinely worry now that Sandfall has become a legitimate threat to the corpo investor grift of bloated budgets and mass hirings of DEI dead weight.
Might lead to under the table funding of journo hit pieces and cancel campaigns.

It's not really Sandfall themselves, but Kepler. They went from a C tier publisher/indie co-op to securing a lot of hits recently. I wouldn't mind them bringing back the soul of old Devolver

its fine if you dropped it cause of the parry mechanic. its integral to the combat design and never goes away so probably for the best you dont force yourself to play a mechanic you cant enjoy, even if you can eventually build your party to ignore it by the final act. you do miss out on the music however and its very different to hearing it ingame vs hearing the ost on a playlist due to how the sound design utilizes it.

To be fair, the game doesn't even shy away from the twist. You can call it as soon as act 1, because it's so clearly telegraphed.
Fuck, painted Renoir and painted Alicia outright spell it out for you, but at this point, you have no idea what does that have to do with anything.

the intro
one of the strongest hooks I've seen in a game in a very long time and it pretty much maintains that sense of worldbuilding all the way through until the end of act 2 fighting the paintress. I was fucking mouth agape that whole time.
I don't hate the twist or anything but it's just not quite the same after you go back into the painting and you start to piece together the full picture for me

each time the twist happens, the city of lumiere becomes less important to the story. by the end, its not even a factor in either maelle or verso's motivation as both of them have much more selfish reasoning for their decisions.

They already set up a harry potter-like world with the whole painters vs writers thing but I'm hoping that they do standalone stories like final fantasy did, that don't have ridiculous dumb plot twists that ruin everything. Sometimes, less is more. We're sadly gonna get a second game involving the paint shit but it is what it is, here's hoping they explore other settings but keep the gameplay and add more to it.

What makes you think that? I don't think they would want to go back to the Dessendre shit. Maaaaaaybe they'll have Alicia returning for the sequel, but that's about it.

For me the whole thing just felt like that sense of grand scale of the primary conflict absolutely fell off of a cliff after act 2. Like man, when you first load into lumiere with that looming monolith in the distance as you slowly piece together what these people are "celebrating" and ultimately fighting for, I've never been so hooked in my fucking life. And then it just drip feeds you more and more of the mystery with the ever looming threat and size of the monolith getting closer the whole time, culminating in that final fight and genuinely having no idea if the game is about to fucking end or what can even possibly come after what you just did.
But by the end it's such an interpersonal and small scale story and there are literally only two characters that matter at all. Doesn't have anything to do with "the painting people are fake!!"" or whatever wrong bullshit, it's just that basically nothing is important except the dysfunctional broken family dynamic

It's not a bad story and I think the dilemma the characters face is meaningful and worth talking/thinking about but it's just not that I was ultimately hoping to see with what hooked me about the game in the first place.

I think they could have told a story about grief tearing a family apart without sacrificing basically every character and making it about LE NOTHING MATTERS LE ESCAPISM BAD. Maybe the world could have been the paintress' mind/soul that existed within a painting, but it's its own self contained thing and as the game progressed the world would gradually change to reflect her state of mind, until you can eventually chose to help her or fail and plunge her psyche and the world into oblivion. That way, characters still matter because it's no longer the classic NOTHING MATTERED LMAO bullshit. But what do I know, I'm just some asshole on 4chan. Hopefully they do better with the next game.

I was fine with the twist - because I called it almost at the start. But the game lost me right at the end when it first presented a difficult moral dillemma and then started taking sides by downplaying the one side of the debate in favour of the other.
The moral dillemma of sacrificing the whole world for the whims of one guy? Doesn't matter, they are fake anyway. Maelle outright asking what right do Verso and Renoir have to force a life of a cripple onto her? Doesn't matter, she'll get over it. Renoir being an absolutist shithead that can't be bothered to compromise for shit? Doesn't matter, the game takes his side and rewards him for it. The fact that Maelle spent her whole in a canvas and doesn't want to leave her found family behind? Doesn't matter, all fake, she's delusional and just like Aline.
The ending was the part where the game really lost me, because it was so incredibly stacked in favour of one "correct" option.

"Verso", Maelle, Aline, and Clea are complete pieces of self centered shit.
The only decent people in the game are Verso and Renoir.
Especially at the end when you see the last fragment of Verso, like his piece of garbage painted counterpart, really does want to die but you can infer why he stays.
