>>712459612 (OP)I finished the game today and I have mixed feelings
Act 1 was ludo kino deluxe and it sat the bar so high I was literally dreaming about what would happen next
Once it got revealed that it was just a family feud and basically a dream world I got severely disappointed and I was sure that Gustave would come back, either as the evil mastermind behind it all or returning to save the party from certain doom. That didn't happen either so the character just felt thrown away and underused. They managed to salvage it somewhat with Verso's ending, but I just felt the game had wasted a lot of potential.
Also, the skill trees could definitely use some work, you don't really need to max them out so you end up with a bunch of leftover points and abilities you don't really need to use (btw Monoco is fucking OP, love this nigga). And I experienced some weird bugs where when running it would stutter, the music would just randomly stop and the camera being wonky.
I give it a strong 8 out of 10
>>712467157>just a family feud and basically a dream worldIt's not though, and that's the big IQ filter I keep seeing with this game. The canvas world is a creation, yes, but the game spends hours and hours very clearly and deliberately showing you that everyone in it is very much a real person with free will and independent thought. Regardless, this kind of dives into the argument of human sentience. AI vs real people type of shit.
Not really going to go in depth here but the main idea is this - can you distinguish between a highly intelligent and realistic AI vs a real person?
Just because they look and act human doesn't mean they're capable of thinking, feeling, suffering, etc. It just means they look and *act* human.
We don't know if they aren't just "programmed" by the painter to act like humans or if they actually are. Given that the painted world is a fantasy metaphysical world conjured by the painters imagination, there's no real proof that the people there are 1) alive 2) sentient and not just highly realistic approximations of real life people. Passing the Turing test doesn't mean you're a real person (google turing test by the way - it dives deeper into the subject of distinguishing machine from human)

machines can not work as intended either. in fact, even looking at AI, we've had countless issues with AI exhibiting "undesirable" behavior such as racism, mistaking black people for gorillas, thinking chinks forgot to open their eyes etc etc.

>>712503380From the information present in the game, it doesn't appear as though the piece of a Painter's soul left in the Canvas has agency--in other words, it exists as a source or anchor that keeps the Canvas in place perpetually, rather than continually painting new things into the Canvas.
And because Verso's Canvas was made when he was a child, and he died when he was around his early 30s, we can assume that the soul left in the Canvas does not expire, or at least not fast enough to matter. These are still paintings, at the end of the day, so in one way you can consider it the fading of paint over time due to the environment, or as a world compare it to the entropy of our own universe.
The details are different, but fundamentally the Canvas is a world just like ours.

By the end of the game the only family member he has left in some capicity is Maelle and if the world persist it'll come at the cost of her own life which is why at the end of Maelle you see the characters from his POV and when it comes to Maelle he can't help but feel sadness at how she's rotting away in her world for this world.

He has conversations with Renoir in front of lune, sciel, and maelle where they are obviously talking about something incredibly important, and he even alludes to Maelles importance, again, in front of them, and they just don't follow up at all.
Like, even at the end, when they kill the paintress, they are just so damn incurious about the whole thing and Verso's interactions with the paintress and Renoir. It's bizarre watching it. It really taints Lune and Sciel IMO, and they barely feel like characters or relevant to the story at all.

>>712522650I do think that both Verso AND Renour have writers on their side, if only because nobody is willing to call them out on their logical fallacies. And this makes the game weirdly stacked in their favour. You may think of her as Maelle, which is wrong, Maelle is gone at the end of act 2, Alicia in the canvas only has Maelle's memories, she's nothing alike, she wants control, lies to everyone, manipulates. She is Aline 2.0. In her ending she doesn't even restore Verso's painted family, she just tortures him, while controlling everyone to not bat an eye to it. Lune and Sciel would never just watch that willingly.
Verso tried to save everyone, he stuck together with Maelle even against his father, but the more you get into act 3, the more he realizes that erasing the canvas is the only way to save his sister from turning into a monster.

Gave me real Xenoblade 1 vibes (and it's one of my all-time favorite games).
>>712523981Let's spill some ink! BRAAAAP
>>712523362i liked that part. it shows that both sides were flawed and that theres not really a right answer to grief, especially when the desires of the dead and the desires of the people left behind conflict. like you said though, the plot doesnt really follow up on this well so we are left with pianoboy discussions forever.
I hope Sandfall doesn't get greedy and overextert themselves, lest their next title will fall short of expectations.
>>712524390Final Fantasy 2, Devil May Cry 2
I'm sure there is other examples, but you can make a bad sequel and bounce back, hoping it wont be bad though
>>712524390>lest their next title will fall short of expectations.I mean, it's almost guaranteed it will. Not saying it will be bad, but lightning doesn't strike the same place twice
>>712459612 (OP)Unironically, when I saw the game cover.
>>712524469there was alot of lightning being captured too. getting that one guy for the music was definitely a major boon.

>>712524302>it shows that both sides were flawed and that theres not really a right answer to grief, especially when the desires of the dead and the desires of the people left behind conflict.Sure, but at this point I felt like the game was taking Verso's side a bit too much, to the point I picked Maelle's ending out of sheer spite. Because I felt that you can't just dismiss all those complicated points Maelle just brought up with one simple "just get over it" and that's what I felt the game was trying to do with Verso's ending.
>>712524570>there was alot of lightning being captured tooYeah, and as the saying "lightning in the bottle" implies, it's incredible difficult to do so again. Way too many crazy coincidences had to come together for E33 to blow up like it did.
>>712522996>lune and sciel dont even attempt at allbecause they're not real people and Renoir was right
>>712524429The sequel might be good, but it's going to be very hard to meet expectations after the first game. They caught lightning in a bottle with E33.
I was on team fuck verso's lying by omission ass until maelle became a necromancer
>>712524819I think we can all say with confidence the music will likely deliver again
>>712524390They created the studio specifically to make this game. Now they have nothing to follow up.

>>712524639Smart man, but I genuinely worry now that Sandfall has become a legitimate threat to the corpo investor grift of bloated budgets and mass hirings of DEI dead weight.

>>712525008>Sandfall has become a legitimate threat to the corpo investor grift of bloated budgets and mass hirings of DEI dead weight. It's not really Sandfall themselves, but Kepler. They went from a C tier publisher/indie co-op to securing a lot of hits recently. I wouldn't mind them bringing back the soul of old Devolver
>>712459612 (OP)Uninstalled it after a few hours, the short story segments between the cringe never ending combat wasnt worth it.
>The entire gameplay is just pressing the parry button Fuck off with this.
>>712524547I adore how mysterious it is. Why are people fighting a crying woman? Why is she crying? What the the hell kind of a name is expedition 33? etc
>>712525238its fine if you dropped it cause of the parry mechanic. its integral to the combat design and never goes away so probably for the best you dont force yourself to play a mechanic you cant enjoy, even if you can eventually build your party to ignore it by the final act. you do miss out on the music however and its very different to hearing it ingame vs hearing the ost on a playlist due to how the sound design utilizes it.
>>712459612 (OP)more like Expedition 33/100, the game is middling, but the girls are cute so I'll bump it up to 66/100
>>712525582theres alot of initial hook that draws you in. i feel the game's biggest weakness is that abandons most of it for the twist and followup twist and is worse off due to it.
>>712525674The music is mid as fuck no idea why people are going crazy over it.
>>712525802like i said, its very different to listening to it outside the game than it is ingame.
>>712525802i think its because of vocals.
everytime retards praise ost it have someone on your ear at all times
>>712525783To be fair, the game doesn't even shy away from the twist. You can call it as soon as act 1, because it's so clearly telegraphed.
Fuck, painted Renoir and painted Alicia outright spell it out for you, but at this point, you have no idea what does that have to do with anything.
>>712525887GOOD MORNING SAAR
>>712459612 (OP)the intro
one of the strongest hooks I've seen in a game in a very long time and it pretty much maintains that sense of worldbuilding all the way through until the end of act 2 fighting the paintress. I was fucking mouth agape that whole time.
I don't hate the twist or anything but it's just not quite the same after you go back into the painting and you start to piece together the full picture for me
>>712525802I actually had to turn the music volume down because it was so fucking annoying.
>>712525986Dunno, I liked the music overall but I noticed it does overuse the leitmotif way too much.
>>712496612I slapped the glasses on her as soon as I got that outfit and never saw her facial expressions again for the rest of the game kek.
>>712525964each time the twist happens, the city of lumiere becomes less important to the story. by the end, its not even a factor in either maelle or verso's motivation as both of them have much more selfish reasoning for their decisions.
They already set up a harry potter-like world with the whole painters vs writers thing but I'm hoping that they do standalone stories like final fantasy did, that don't have ridiculous dumb plot twists that ruin everything. Sometimes, less is more. We're sadly gonna get a second game involving the paint shit but it is what it is, here's hoping they explore other settings but keep the gameplay and add more to it.
>>712526216>We're sadly gonna get a second game involving the paint shit but it is what it is,What makes you think that? I don't think they would want to go back to the Dessendre shit. Maaaaaaybe they'll have Alicia returning for the sequel, but that's about it.
>>712526198For me the whole thing just felt like that sense of grand scale of the primary conflict absolutely fell off of a cliff after act 2. Like man, when you first load into lumiere with that looming monolith in the distance as you slowly piece together what these people are "celebrating" and ultimately fighting for, I've never been so hooked in my fucking life. And then it just drip feeds you more and more of the mystery with the ever looming threat and size of the monolith getting closer the whole time, culminating in that final fight and genuinely having no idea if the game is about to fucking end or what can even possibly come after what you just did.
But by the end it's such an interpersonal and small scale story and there are literally only two characters that matter at all. Doesn't have anything to do with "the painting people are fake!!"" or whatever wrong bullshit, it's just that basically nothing is important except the dysfunctional broken family dynamic
It's not a bad story and I think the dilemma the characters face is meaningful and worth talking/thinking about but it's just not that I was ultimately hoping to see with what hooked me about the game in the first place.
>>712526910seems to be a somewhat shared opinion that the story gets weaker in regards to lumiere at the end of act 1. lune and sciel do not rep their city enough fill the void
>>712459612 (OP)never gonna play it shillbro
>>712526910I think they could have told a story about grief tearing a family apart without sacrificing basically every character and making it about LE NOTHING MATTERS LE ESCAPISM BAD. Maybe the world could have been the paintress' mind/soul that existed within a painting, but it's its own self contained thing and as the game progressed the world would gradually change to reflect her state of mind, until you can eventually chose to help her or fail and plunge her psyche and the world into oblivion. That way, characters still matter because it's no longer the classic NOTHING MATTERED LMAO bullshit. But what do I know, I'm just some asshole on 4chan. Hopefully they do better with the next game.
>>712525826>I'm ready to settle down now
>>712525802All the songs are great, even that weird Iphone Ad song is catchy, How can you not get to Act II, listen to that Overworld song and not be blown away by it? Especially coming from an unknown soundcloud artist.
>>712527228>le nothing matters le escapism badIts funny how this game brings out the 80IQ posters.
I was fine with the twist - because I called it almost at the start. But the game lost me right at the end when it first presented a difficult moral dillemma and then started taking sides by downplaying the one side of the debate in favour of the other.
The moral dillemma of sacrificing the whole world for the whims of one guy? Doesn't matter, they are fake anyway. Maelle outright asking what right do Verso and Renoir have to force a life of a cripple onto her? Doesn't matter, she'll get over it. Renoir being an absolutist shithead that can't be bothered to compromise for shit? Doesn't matter, the game takes his side and rewards him for it. The fact that Maelle spent her whole in a canvas and doesn't want to leave her found family behind? Doesn't matter, all fake, she's delusional and just like Aline.
The ending was the part where the game really lost me, because it was so incredibly stacked in favour of one "correct" option.

"Verso", Maelle, Aline, and Clea are complete pieces of self centered shit.
The only decent people in the game are Verso and Renoir.
Especially at the end when you see the last fragment of Verso, like his piece of garbage painted counterpart, really does want to die but you can infer why he stays.
>>712527631its funny cause the question of their right to live? its no, they dont. they were created by aline in verso's canvas without his consent. all of lumiere legitimately have no right to be there.
>>712527732Renoir was an asshole as well. He was a cause of the game's majority of conflicts, because he thought he knows best and couldn't compromise or empathise for shit. His intentions were good, his methods were very wrong.
