Was Jin Sakai a good character?

Yes. He’s a good example of a how to make a stoic MC that has depth and dimension to them.

>mongols invade Tsushima thinking it'll be an easy victory
>it mostly is
>a lone samurai valiantly tries to defend his people before being thrown off a bridge to his "death"
>rumor spreads of the lone samurai's resurrection
>Jin adopts ruthless brutality and sheds the samurai code he has spent his whole life honoring
>more and more mongols are being ruthlessly slaughtered by this lone samurai
>he gets nicknamed the "Ghost" by the people of Tsushima
>he eventually learns to accept this new name and revel in his new status
>uses this name to spread actual fear into every dirty filthy fucking mongol everywhere
>that fear is actually shown through gameplay as he brutally slaughters groups of mongols effortlessly and they run in fear
>he wins (almost) all by himself
It was kino. Wish we got more character tropes like this. Watching Jin become the Ghost was based. Fuck Samurai honor, the mongols don't deserve such. Total mongol death

Yeah. Having him treated like a myth by people in the story is a nice way to address the usual dissonance between the character in the cutscene and the game avatar that single handedly kicks an army off an island winning 12 v 1 fights, in addition to the character being good.

Chasing the Mongols away after beheading their commander at Yarikawa was one of the best moments in gaming for me in a long time. Like watching 13 Assassins.

The only thing that irked me is that no matter how hard you try to be honorabru samurai, the game literally forces you to assassinate people once or twice. I fought literally every single camp straight up no tricks and Uncle Iroh still gave me shit at the end for being a ninja.

Still a great game though. Not buying the 2nd one. Just don't really have interest in it, 1 was enough

I love that that faggot mongol tries to run away and Jin stabs him through the back and leads him towards the rest of the army and makes sure they all watch as he decapitated him

Yeah, and killing Shimura is the perfect ending arc for his character, I don't know why people choose the other option

On paper the "muh honor" argument looked stupid to me, but the game did a good job at presenting the dilemma and balancing the pros and cons

It's funny to me that people have called this game like Assassin't Creed: Japan or whatever, I always hated Ubisoft games and I didnt really even know what I was expecting when I played Ghost of Tsushima but it was all around excellent game, personally I dont get the praise about Rockstar games stories and I think this one was at least on par. The combat system was interesting in the sense that even on normal difficulty, getting swarmed by just normal enemies could result in quick death but you got so many tools, that if you died it always felt like your own fault. I only finished this game once and I really should get back to it

I haven't played too many Ubisoft Open World type games, so playing GoT didn't seem to carry that taint for me. Setting the game on hard mode is the way to go, makes the combat even better, particularly because they don't inflate enemy HP so much as they increase the odds that they'll attack in groups and use special tactics. My one complaint was that it demanded switching stances often, and I found myself tapping the dpad without a stance change due to an animation not completing or some other such nonsense. A minor annoyance in an otherwise solid combat system.

Nice I was just gonna make a Ghost thread.

so I'm in the middle of chapter 2 I think and I'm just struggling to find the appeal of this game. keep in mind I'm 33 going on 75 years old and just probably getting tired of open world games. I want some rails dammit. the game is beautiful but man it's just a slog to get through.

Suckerpunch always makes good characters. They always make good games. I'm more excited for Yotei than any other release this year.

Rejecting the code of samurai means rejecting his uncle's stupid fucking idea about honor killing. You can't pretend to enjoy Jin's character arc and then act like killing his uncle make sense. Rejecting Shimura is more in line with Jin's development.

Both killing and sparing work. Sparing is him remaining true to his philosophy and giving a massive middle finger to Shimura by dishonouring him further. Killing him is a final act of kindness that is Jin symbolically killing his old life forever.

how did mongols reverse engineer jins poison

plot-convenience playhouse, but if it had to be done in real life for that era, the mongols would have an herbalist or doctor analyze the symptoms of the dead and dying men, and determine what local herbs could have caused it. They had informers and spies among the Japanese who could also have informed them of the local flora.

then surely they didnt need to have jin poison someone to figure out that the flowers that grow everywhere are poisonous
i fucking hate that plot point because its literally the only time where jin is actually somehow responsible for something bad happening

I agree. By that time I was steamrolling hordes of mongols, so how is a direct attack not an alternative at that point? I would have accepted that the leader escaped for act 3 if it meant being able to choose. A misstep in an otherwise fine story.

I think he would kill him not because he believes in honor, but because Shimura wants him to. Jin wouldnt want him go back to Shogun empty handed where he would get humiliated and dishonored even further.

>Jin wouldnt want him go back to Shogun empty handed where he would get humiliated and dishonored even further
The Shogun appointed him as the instructor for the samurai reinforcements on anti-mongol tactics. The job of chasing after The Ghost is a secondary task appointed to Shimura. In killing him you set Tsushima back nearly to square one with a buttload of samurais knowing fuck all on how to deal with Mongols.
The idea that the Shogun would kill him for not catching Jin when he just got assigned to be the samurai's drill instructor is ridiculous cope.
