Nothing but there's something to be said about a linear game that's full price and can be beat in 3-4 hours with no side content.

It takes agency away from the player. If a game is linear, then it isn't really a game because the outcome, and more importantly the path the player takes to get to that outcome, is predetermined and unaffected by anything the player does.

Basically, a linear game is just a movie in which the person watching it has to occasionally push buttons to see the next scene.

Nothing inherently, it's only an issue when there's no skill check required for progress
Double Dragon is linear and it's fucking sweet

Full linear, like final hallway 13 is bad, just the same as modern open world sloppa. What you really want is interconnected, detailed levels with secrets. But thats too hard for devs to do now

It depends. The more railroaded something is, the less agency it offers a player and it becomes like watching a movie. There can be good linearity just like there can be bad open-ended design, but people usually see games that were more open originally but become more linear as having lost out on their identity and charm points.

Mario still has 2D platforming in mostly sequential levels, or at least it has an indicator of difficulty for players to be able to choose to gradually increase the intensity. You can still play easy to hard like in Super Mario Bros. In addition, Mario has 3D platforming games (both linear and open), racing, party, sports, RPG, board, dancing, and every other kind of game. There hasn't been a loss of how Mario used to play, unlike how some series drift from their roots.

Only a problem when it’s linear AND boring. You can have a straight line and still make it engaging—tight pacing, good mechanics, maybe some meaningful choices along the way even if the ending is fixed. It's when it feels like you're being dragged down a corridor clicking through cutscenes that it sucks. Looking at you, XIII.
