Whats the videogame equivalent to this? Something that was made with complete love and devotion to the medium, by people of talent and sincerity. Something that will stand the test of time forever as the pinnacle of everything it stands for.

The LOTR movies are decent fun but the books are horrendous. I can only imagine enjoying them if you're a stoner or you just cant get enough of genealogies and bad poetry.

Elden Ring is the closest I can think of, but The Lord of the Rings are arguably the greatest movies ever made, and there really isn't a game equivalent.

I don't mind the books too much but I also don't get that much enjoyment out of the actual writing style. It's mostly the lore that's interesting. Like the timeline at the back of Return of the King is possibly my favourite part of the trilogy.

Metroid Prime trilogy actually fits this well.

>MP1 // Fellowship
Perfect. Objectively the best pacing and best of the trilogy. Personally you can like any of the trilogy but under scrutiny this is the one with the least flaws.

>MP2 // Two Towers
A sharp turn from the previous entry that is slower and more methodical. The 'dark horse' of the trilogy.

>MP3 // Return of the King
Bombastic, action packed, insane production values. Should for all reason and purpose lose the soul of its predecessors but still manages to hold it close to the chest despite the intense ride. Has plenty of flaws but is still a respectable sendoff to the trilogy.

Which means MP4 will be The Hobbit.

It's a solid trilogy, but the behind the scenes are a little different. While there's still a 'lightning in a bottle' element to LOTR, it was very clearly planned throughout, with years of pre-production alone. Halo on the other hand was just barely slapped together, the first two games in particular going through pretty rushed developments.

yeah I agree sort of.
the books are hit and miss, like some chapters are fucking amazing while others are just dozens of pages of nothing really happening.
like the Council of Elrond is probably the highlight of the books.

when it comes to the movies, they're pretty faithful and very soulful adaptations, but the 3rd movie kind of sucks because it breaks Rule 1 of ending a movie ie: end it within 5min of the climax.
While the book is way worse at this, the movie sort of farts around for 30min longer than it really needed to.

The only thing I hated in the books was Tolkien needing to snub in his insufferable christfag shit. I can respect the morality behind it that drove him to write such works but the constant
>erm ackshually God DOES exist
shit started to feel obnoxious.

>um actually no the ring doesn't fall in because of the trials and sacrifices of two humble people, God pushed Gollum in
>um actually no I can't really decide if orcs are ontologically evil or not because everyone no matter how evil needs to be redeemable because God said so, disregard their love for sadism and the amount of blood they've spilled

>Something that was made with complete love and devotion to the medium, by people of talent and sincerity.
This didn't happen.
While Jackson did like the books he was not an expert on them, nor did love them like the other 99997 people who made the movie possible (excluding Alan Lee and John Howe). It's a deeply commercial product.
The only differente to the slop that gets made nowadays is that the people were skilled at their craft and did their fucking job. Nowadays they just phone it in.

Tolkien commented when he was still alive that Lee was his personal inspiration for the character of Gandalf, which always struck me as weird since he agreed to portray Saruman instead.

Nah, no way.
Even a midwit director can appear competent if he surrounds himself with a good team.
If you look at something like GoT Season 8, made in 2019, you'll realize nothing is made with a modicum or care. Even the most basic aspects of filmaking got fucked just because they could not care.

I will never understand how GoT became so popular when it is just edgelord fantasy with lots of misery mixed in and dumb political relations. George R.R. Martin seems like a really disgusting person and the antithesis of someone like Tolkien.

Gandalf is generally a lot more of a hardass and more enigmatic and brooding in the books, seeming more like nobility of some sort. In the movies he's more fun loving especially in the first movie and is pretty much a glorified homeless man.

I know, I just mean that if I was in Lee's shoes I would have fought hard to be cast as Gandalf. You are the real life inspiration for the character, at the perfect age to play him and it will likely be your last opportunity to do so before you croak from a bad case of being old.

They ran out of homework to copy and just did dude zombie bear lmao. Without the novels it showed them as the hacks they were. The second Stan Lee died Marvel's MCU started falling apart. George Lucas sells Disney to SW and we haven't gotten a movie from them since 2019 and the last some what decent one came out in 2016. There's a big lack of legitimate talent in Hollywood.

Personally I'm not sure where you're getting your idea from. Lee was the inspiration for Gandalf? He was 30 year old horror actor. They also didn't really KNOW each other, they just met in a pub once and Lee geeked out and came on the floor.

No, no, no, you don't understand.
Every technical aspect of the season is bad: the lightning, the photography, the color grading, the sets, the costumes, the writing, the pace, the CGI, the camera shots and even the focus on the cameras is off sometimes.
They had professionals to take care of all this. And not one of them could give one shit to do their job. I can tell you not one person felt pride in what they did.
And it happens again and again in nowadays film and television.

I think what shits me about LotR in general is it spends nearly all of its time on the side characters.
Once the Fellowship breaks it just turns into Elf/Dwarf adventures while occasionally checking in on watching the 2 hobbits argue.

Two Towers ends with them entering Shelobs lair too. By then they're pretty much at the endgame. Meanwhile Aragorn, Theoden, Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas have to rally all the free men of Middle-Earth to repel an assault by Sauron using just a fraction of his available forces. Then the rest of the world is doing the same. Mirkwood is under attack, Dain and Brand are both killed defending each other in a pyrrhic victory, Lothlorien was under attack, The Shire was being closed in by Saruman and his forces or even outside agents.

I enjoy the themes and setting, and how its been a major iconic influence for all of fantasy as a concept. But by modern standards it is easy to poke fun of some of the dense walls of detail on plot elements that don't necessarily tie back into anything.

Cutting Tom Bombadil from the movies might be the easiest and best move a book to film adaption could have made.

Man I like the original Elden Ring but comparing it to both the LOTR trilogy of books and the movie adaptations that came 50 years later is just wrong. ER was FOTM, thats now being tarnished (no pun intended) in real time by corporate greed to give people a crappy Fortnite clone, an actual movie and worse in the future. Hell you would have a point if you said Dark Souls but Elden Ring? God no. Nobody 20-50 years from now is going to be bringing up Elden Ring's influence or positive impact on the world like they did for The Hobbit, Fellowship, Two Towers, ROTK or the Silmarillion. For the love of your entire genealogy stop destroying what little dignity this fandom has left.

Fromdrones legitimately seek out any mention of LOTR on /v/ to specifically bitch about how much they despise Tolkien and how superior Fromslop is. They honest to god despise Tolkien because he wrote about the good guys winning and was a Catholic man, but moreso because they have to defend GRRM and everything GRRM believes. GRRM lives in constant seethe of Tolkien so Fromshitters by nature must too. You can see proof of this phenomenon in the archive going back to as long ago as when GRRM was first announced as being involved. These are sick people.
