I would have sworn that Psychic types were Super Effective against Ghost types.
I thought it was because psychics are always fighting ghosts in japanese stories.
Although in the anime Ash gets a ghost type to fight the psychic gym leader which always seemed weird.
I think it's because in Gen1 all the ghost pokemon were Ghost/Poison so psychic attacks WERE super effective on them. But only because of the Poison.
Psychic being super effective against Poison never made any sense to me. Surely poison would dull mental powers so it should be the other way around.

It was supposed to be, but they messed up the programming for that in Gen 1. Not like it would have made much of a difference. Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar have twice (or more) Special than Attack stat, Ghost moves were all Physical back then, and the only Ghost move without set damage is the 20-power Lick. Meaning you would have done much more damage with a resisted Dream Eater than STAB Super Effective Lick, even Thunderbolt or Thunder from a TM would be better.

They were supposed to be but there are only 2 ghost type attacks in gen 1. lick with base 20 damage and nightshade which is fixed damage. Not to mention the only ghost type is part poison.

That staircase is optional. It only leads to an optional part of the hideout with 2 trainers and an item.
