the steam deck is the worst of both worlds
too weak for modern games, and too big and hot for a handheld
it's no surprise it only sold 4 million units, that's 3 times less than the wii u
even the new xbox rog handheld looks more promising than the deck

why are 2/3 of the screen showing a game that runs like complete garbage on the deck?
with that shitty tablet you have to settle with either emulating older games or playing 2d indies

Kinda agree with this gaming handhelds would be more usable if it they had weaker specs and so were smaller/lighter with better battery life and they would be cheaper as well

The Deck is sold directly to consumers and is barely in physical stores, it's also being mostly sold in America and doesn't even have ads on TV on the internet. It's not a mainstream machine nor was it ever meant to be one. Things could change with the Steam Deck 2 but that's entirely on Valve for what they want to do with it.

That's why comments about Switch being underpowered are often so ignorant.
The context of something being a handheld changes just about anything:

1. Whatever performance is being delivered must be delivered at a power draw of 10% or less of a dedicated home console or desktop PC
2. Whatever heat is being produced must be able to be radiated away with as little active cooling and as much passive cooling as possible
3. Said heat must also never go beyond a certain point or else the device will be uncomfortable to hold
4.Battery life must also be enough to last at least what can be called "a single session" so that actual progress can be made. So 2-4h are the minimum.
5. Form factor needs to be small enough to be comfortable to hold for longer periods and not be too bulky or heavy, which means designers are heavily space constricted which then affects all other aspects in return.

In fact the battery life is among the most important aspects more so than raw performance: a Switch 1 Pro DID come out. Only: Nintendo didn't use the improved performance of the chip to make the games run at higher framerates. Instead they downclocked the chip to run at the original system's performance. But now it runs at a fraction of a fraction of the power draw and the battery lasted 3x longer than in the original model (6-12h instead of 2-4).

The GameBoy handily won against the MUCH more capable, but also bulky, GameGear for these very reasons.

Making a good handheld system is MUCH harder than making a good desktop/home console system because there are so many restricting factors you have to account for.

So if the Switch 1 (especially post battery upgrade) is the GameBoy, then the Deck is the GameGear.

Let's clear up some misconceptions about the Steam Deck.

>it barely outsold the n-gage/wii u!
Now compare the Deck to other PC handhelds and you realise it dominates the (very niche) market. Why are tendiesnoys crying about sales when the Gamecube exists and got mogged by the PS2 at the time? Are they just hypocrites? Also, Valve clearly sees the Steam Deck as a live experiment. Sales are second to SteamOS and Proton (the main products).
>but it's weak!
Handhelds are always behind home hardware. Steam Deck = 1050ti with a Steam Controller bolted on. Also the Legion and Ally exist and you can install SteamOS on them if you really need to play post-2020 AAA, and if you want to avoid raping your battery, Moonlight exists. You do own a PC right?
>but you don't own games!
You don't have spend money on Steam. You can install DRM-FREE software from GoG/itch.io/DLsite/torrents.
>but physical!
Locked down proprietary cartridges are just as bad as software DRM.
>but Nintendo games!
Obviously Nintendo hardware is going to be backed by their IP - their only unique selling point. I don't expect to ever run Mario Kart World on the Steam Deck, ever. But you know what I will play? Everything else. Even Deck Verified alone mogs the eShop, and don't get me started on PC exclusives that you can play with the minute it takes to set a Proton version. Emudeck completely mogs NSO, and you don't have to pay a subscription.
>but the resolution!
800p is fine with 7.4 inches. Higher resolutions will strangle the battery, which is bad for a portable.
>but Switch 2 Cyberpunk!
Stuttery 30-40fps on 5 year old game. Cool.
>but Linux!
Valve fixed it with Proton. Fuck Windows 11 and Epic Games.
>you're a jeet shilling!
The Steam Deck is LITERALLY SOLD IN FIRST WORLD NATIONS ONLY. Meanwhile jeets line up for Switch 2 as we speak.

Are there any more arguments? Or can we all agree the Steam Deck is based and the final solution to the console problem?

Anyone who has tried to play competitive shooters with a steam deck knows the trackpads are a meme. At best, a marginally more convenient way of interacting with desktop mode.
