The maps were really just big arenas, so this actually is a formula that works for Painkiller. Of course, if you never played the originals than this would make you piss and shit your pants in anger because positivity or even a "meh" is much cooler.

the only thing I liked about original painkiller was the fun ragdolls.
I'm sure the new game won't have that, or they'll disappear after .2 seconds so they can render more fireworks particles everywhere

Is it actually playable as a non co-op? or does the design lean so heavily into that it's not fun solo? what annoys me about modern gaming is that i always have to skip co-op games because i don't really have any established online friend list to play it with. For a hobby that is supposed to cater to shut ins they seem to do the opposite.

It's also worth noting that left 4 dead having a server browser absolutely made that game viable with randoms. I think that's the only game i have serious hours in for co-op.
