Just started, any tips? Is it worth playing Dark Cloud 2 after or should I just move on to Rogue Galaxy?

Gameplay is much rougher than DC2
>should I just move on to Rogue Galaxy
RG is more standard JRPG-fare. If you like DC2 and want more of that gameplay, try DC

Make sure you ALWAYS have lots of repair powders on you, unless you like the idea of permanently losing a weapon because you attacked one too many times.

I've got this pretty ingrained after searching for beginner tips. It's funny how punishing this specific mechanic is and outside of that, it's been pretty lax. Bats were giving me a bunch of grief but charged sword attacks seems to dispatch them pretty reliably. Just been slogging through each floor and returning after to top up on supplies at the Mayor. By the sound of it I should delay building the shop until right before the first boss

Make the effort to fully explore and get all the gems/etc you can. Stock up on repair powder. If you want the most powerful weapons, be willing to spam repair powders on more fragile but powerful weapons. Maybe stat out with different elemental focuses for each weapon depending on the monsters you intend to face. Watch monsters and dodge a bit to observe and learn their attack patterns. Go to every dungeon back room if you're not a pussy, since the best loot will be found in the sub-rooms and the vibe is always comfy-spooky in them. Dodging is essential, so learn to do it. As I recall, fishing is decent for some gems.

I guess I just semi-arbitrarily mentioned RG because it's next on my list of games to emulate unless I'm so gripped by DC and need to immediately play the sequel

Luckily I got the gist that it's in my interest to extract the most value from each floor even if it means moving through the game a bit slower. Should I just look up a weapon tree guide or is it fine and well enough to approach the system blind? Also it dodging just moving back on the L stick while locked on? I'm only like an hour in and tried blocking but the bat poisoned me through it so mostly seems like avoiding attacks is the way to go

You're gonna have to grind for each character, everyone is used in the end dungeon, especially the end fight, everyone needs good gear.

I can't say. I played it a lot, but I never beat it. Personally, I don't think it's necessary (or fun) to look it up.
>Also it dodging just moving back on the L stick while locked on?
I can't remember, but there should be a distinct dodge animation as I best recall. Blocking is not worth it because your weapon durability gets fucked up.
>Poison
Antidotes. Have potions and whatever else to cure yourself, but learn their patterns so you can conserve your stock.

Dodging seems to be a DC2 mechanic, seems like DC1 you just do hit and run tactics.

Fuuuck. I'm going to have to hope the grinding clicks, good to know before I get blindsided though. Funnily enough I remember when I first played RG getting softlocked on a boss because it forced me to use a character I hadn't grinded on so good to avoid that phenomena.

Also I did not realize that DC and RG were the same dev, I guess I'm not as arbitrarily going through them as I thought

It's fine to approach the weapon system blind, just be prepared to go back and forth to grind. And make sure to save often.

You're gonna have to level all the characters to some degree. Yes, even the fat kid. The main kid and the cat are the best, but sadly the cat just returns to being a cat by the end of the game.
