I finished 1 and 2 and wasn’t blown away. Tir is a motherfucker. You go through the entire revolution and he decides to fuck off with Gremio. I almost laughed when Lepant asked Tir to take over in Suikoden 2 and Tir almost sprints out of the building. What a punk ass bitch. Poor Kasumi she just spills her heart out and he remains a silent, charismatic of a brick wall statue. Same with Riki, you go through all that and he fucks off to go backpacking with Nanami and Jowy. Such children they are. Very disappointing from our heroes.

You didn't retain much of the plot, did you? There's a reason Tir stays on the move and doesn't get close to people. The true rune that he received from his good buddy Ted is extremely cursed, and has a gravitational pull of death. It's the same reason Ted was a wanderer that didn't put down roots for centuries. They don't call it the Soul Eater rune for nothing, it really does draw in souls and its tough for Tir to suppress that. So by necessity he keeps to himself. The sole exception at the time of Suikoden 2 being Gremio because his soul was already taken by the Soul Eater once.

Another thing: You mention Kasumi. Maybe you didn't notice but during the scene where she meets Tir McDohl again, she runs off crying not because he won't talk to her, but because he hasn't aged a day. She will grow old and die and Tir will still look like a kid. Every day that passes they grow further apart because he is the bearer of the cursed rune, and lest we forget, the harder they try to overcome that gap the more likely it is that she will die sooner or later because of it.

So in summation the real asshole is Ted

Gremio earned my ire with the whole simpering young master act. I loved Viktor calling his ass out and telling him to stay home. It was infuriating when he forced himself to come despite me choosing no. Perhaps it’s an extension of how frustrated I was with how much S1 restricted my party. I can't disagree with that. I love both games but holy hell did Suikoden 1 lock your party a LOT. I like switching my party members around a lot and I liked building my party around unites when possible but it felt so discouraged.

For example: I learned that Krin and Humphrey have a unite that isn't too bad because it works on Krin's speed and Humphrey is strong but slow. The one time you're actually forced to use Krin in the party you're not allowed to take Humphrey! It's like, really?? Fucking hell. Krin was still useful because I could just pop that rune on him that set the whole party's speed to match his but come on

One thing I really liked about the new Suikoden releases, and I don't recall it being the same way in the originals, is the incredibly generous catch up system. Lower level party members catch up sooo quickly. It took all the tediousness out of it and just let me use everybody without feeling too gimped.

Is it really a new thing? One thing I remember from Suikoden is that you never have to grind. You can do few random battles in current area and low leveled guys will catch up soon, and your high leveled guys won't be overleveled cause the exp system will pretty much stop their progression when fighting weak monsters.

In videos and interviews it has been stated by Konami and the team that monetisation in Star Leap doesn't involve the main game. You can get all 108 stars and play the whole game without spending money.

The things you can get from the gacha are characters from other Suikoden games and game boosters for various other mechanics. So you can enjoy the whole game for free and can stop crying now.
