Based take. At some point it stopped feeling like a living town and more like a sterile Sims playground where the animals are just set dressing for your interior design portfolio. The charm was in being a *part* of the village, not its architect, mayor, and interior decorator rolled into one. Give villagers free will again. Let them decorate their houses in bizarre unmatching furniture sets and passive-aggressively insult my fashion choices.

New Leaf is best experienced as the _second_ villager in the town, with the 'mayor' main account left basically ignored, with you only logging into it occasionally to push some essential developments along.
Being adressed as 'mayor' all the time feels unnatural, and you can change too much even in that game.

More of the old formula. I liked New Horizons just fun and put around ~250 hours into it but I feel like that was mostly due to quarentine. I'd also prefer a much more open and expansive universe, the whole 'you can travel to other proceedurely generated islands' just doesn't scratch the same itch.

I always wondered what an Animal Crossing game would be like where you had a set time limit in a town. Like, you move to a town, you have 1 year to live there, and after that year is up, you have to move away. I figured it'd have more of an emotional impact after the year was up (assuming you played it a few times a week). Also in order for it to have any emotional impact, you'd have to give the villagers a more expanded history and complex relationships with the player character and other villagers. Not dating per se, but maybe villager A borrows Villager B's fishing rod and accidentally breaks it. Now Villager B is pissed at villager A and it takes some time before they warm up to each other again.

I have no idea how it'd play. But if you could make the game more about getting to know your new neighbours, and giving each neighbour a complex history and behaviour, it could be really unique.

I don't think it would really work for animal crossing though, nu villagers are already super shallow. Nintendo isn't going to spend the time fleshing them out like that.

1. Softball "relationship" mechanics, even if it's just "best friends" and they drop by your house every now and then and have special dialogue. Make it special too, like having to directly ask them to be your best friend and only being able to have one.
2. Unbreakable golden tools, even if it means locking gold tools behind a long-ass grind or some complex event.
3. Expand all the main NPCs to do more non-NPC things, like being able to find Isabelle shopping for clothes sometimes, or have there be a random chance to find Nook chewing Redd out.
4. Pocket Camp character events. Max out friendship with certain characters or certain groups of characters and you can view an event with them.
5. More clothing types. More accessory types too.
6. You are NOT the mayor unless/until you go through a whole process for it in-game, like you've upgraded your house and the shops a couple times. Could even include an "election" that you automatically win, just to make it feel more special.
7. Add a couple lines of potential dialog per character that nobody else has, independent of their set personality.
