You want the reason? You're not prepared for it.
Spaces like these are supposed to be filled regularly by large groups of genetically similar people with a shared goal.
The subway system exists to move these like-minded people to the places where the contribute to the success of their race and nation.
Stadiums exist to showcase the greatest physical feats of the nation.
Schools educate the statesman and artisans of the next generation.
Factories and refineries produce good of such quality that you would be honored to receive one as a gift.
What you see in a 'liminal space' is the consequence of an evil force destroying this shared bloodline and goal to the point where the accomplishments of the prior generation sit unused and decaying.
TL/DR jews

Liminal Space stuff also has the surreal as a major element, which is pretty appropriate for the current time.

Nobody thinks liminal spaces are scary on their own.
Hint of a threat is scary. Fear of the unknown is scary.
Liminal spaces are just nice because we're forced to be hyper social work rats 24/7 and being in a space with no noise or people is relaxing for most and makes some people anxious because of how they were conditioned.
Beaches are literally liminal spaces.
Nobody finds beaches scary even if they're empty.

There's a bit of an anxious feeling to urban exploration and being in abandoned buildings because you know you're not supposed to be there, and there's a chance of you getting shivved by a vagrant living there, or the cops showing up.

When I was kid my dad would sometimes take me with him to his job when he was working on something after hours, and I would walk around the building and it was vaguely spooky feeling for the place to be dead quiet and empty when I was usually there during the day.
I've never felt this way working graveyard shift at my own job as an adult though. The building being empty feels peaceful thhen.

I always found them comfy. It reminds me of being home alone as a kid or when my mother would take me to her office late in the evening cause she had something to do and I'd just roam around. The solitude and quiet is nice and, growing up in that time, the late century architecture is nostalgic. As a teenager, I did a lot of urbex and got into abandoned hospitals, malls, shopping centers, and what not, and it was always super cool to see. I've been in many spaces that could be called liminal and there were never any monsters there, just me.

liminal spaces are only "scary" because of typical urbex threats in places where there will most likely be no witnesses if a crime were to occur. zoomers are just afraid to think like picrel so they give it a gay retarded name.

Why are low IQ retards unable to grasp why liminal spaces are scary? Once-lively areas that become abandoned are stripped of context and human life, creating a sense of unease. How we expect these places to be contrasts with their newfound emptiness, causing nervousness. This type of fear has long been recognized, though it isn't completely understood. The idea of "Ghost towns" for example refers to both literal haunted towns and eerily empty urban areas. The mind races at the thought of what lurks beyond its borders. Darkness and deep water enhance the fear of the unknown, and the use of familiar locales gives liminal spaces a surreal, dream-like and often nostalgic element that makes them more unsettling. It's not gaudy "shit-your-pants" horror either you niggers, it's a subtle feeling of unease. Fuck off with these bullshit, disingenuous rationalizations and quit finding ways to feed your culture war.

That's what it is. It's Lynchian. A completely normal space, but something is very wrong. Why is it completely empty? It shouldn't be that way, and your pattern recognition gives you the feeling of unease. It's the same intuition that makes you leave a place when it feels dangerous. Your brain is constantly running pattern recognition "software," that gives you feelings about your environment. If you were in a dark, empty hospital IRL, your brain would scream at you to leave.

Same. I like games like Pools, the Complex Expedition, Within the Backrooms, and Anemoiapolis because they're comfy to walk through. If you add a monster to a McDonalds it can become scary, but the environments themselves are pretty cozy. Standing in an empty hallway shouldn't immediately make you afraid just because you're alone.

Once they put those things to shit your pants instead of only having your own fears eating you inside out it's already over. Also actual liminal spaces irl are comfy as fuck

Thing is, AI "horror" is no different than a cgi monster, the thing most people agree isn't scary. Backrooms uses your imagination, the scariest thing you can imagine (literally). It's a nightmare where your own mind fills in the blanks, nothing can be scarier than that. Lynch understood that, and I don't think you know more about horror than Lynch.

I think this is what really throws me for a loop about the whole backrooms thing. Maybe I just misread the original post back on /x/ but I always thought the fucked up thing about that concept was the idea of noclipping out of your average life and being permanently stuck out of bounds, not "oooooo spooky monster chasing you"

Bro, what is this cursed Walgreens-energy hallway Iโ€™m stuck in?? Like, I blinked and now Iโ€™m in a backrooms core aesthetic nightmare and NO ONE is here, not even a cursed Roomba.

Deadass, itโ€™s giving liminal space but not in the chill, nostalgic wayโ€”more like โ€˜I missed a side quest and now Iโ€™m softlocked in reality.โ€™ Iโ€™m talking buzzing fluorescent lights, carpet that smells like trauma, and a vending machine that only takes change from 1996.

Tried calling for help but my phoneโ€™s on 1% and only getting a signal from some network called โ€˜404_LifeNotFound.โ€™ Skibidi toilet jumpscare imminent. I swear I saw a silhouette of a Blockbuster employee in the fog whispering 'Be kind, rewind.'

Iโ€™m literally about to emotionally dissociate and start speaking in analog horror. Like bro, what is the lore??? Who rendered this map?? I didnโ€™t ask for this liminal lore drop. I just wanted an iced coffee and now Iโ€™m on level 37 of existential dread.

Send help or at least a vibe check.

We've all experienced liminal spaces before they were a meme. Well, those of us who aren't children right now, anyway. Liminal spaces in games are just cheap imitations of realizing something is missing.

Their time is limited, as is yours. Don't have regrets; make sure you love your family, no matter how strained the relationships may be. Once they're gone, you can never tell them you love them again.

unironically true.

My gf and I are in our 30s, but she has a 14yo adopted sister.

The 14yo girl has a legitimate fear of being physically alone. She will get anxious and freak out if left alone at home for long periods of time.

Her literal worst fears are being by herself in a room with no phone, tv, or music.

That's when I knew our society is fucked: young people don't understand that being alone in silence with your own internal monologue of thoughts is both normal and healthy. It scares the shit out of them.

They don't even know themselves.

She's said it a bunch of times, but she's also a chronic liar so it's hard to tell what's true or not. I was once having a casual conversation with her and asked her if the idea of her sitting in a room in silence with no phone, no tv, and no music sounded scary. She said yes. There's also been countless times where my gf has been watching her and she'll ask to have one of her friends sleep over because she "doesn't want to be alone."

Yeah, liminal spaces are the stupidest shit ever. Nobody born before the year 2000 would consider an empty room or hallway as "artistic." At most, we would spend 1 second realizing that the lack of windows to the room/corridor gives it a slightly different character compared to rooms/corridors that do, and move on. Yet the zigger watches an analysis video on youtube about it. It's so pointless. JUst yet another thing regular people should not waste time thinking about it any way, but now our culture must analyze it over and over.

Source Engine is great. The main reason why INFRA is one of my favourite games ever. I never thought about it in the context as narrow as liminal spaces, but I guess it qualifies, seeing as you spend your time in the empty spaces next to normal civilization, but kind of on the inverse side of it where you barely meet anyone. I feel like being made on Source greatly contributed to that eerie feeling.

They're not scary but they tend to feel a little weird and dangerous when empty. These are transit spaces between two places with purpose. Being stuck in a space that in-itself has no other purpose than brief travel is obviously anxiety inducing because it wasn't designed for prolonged rest, they're often out of the way of direct visibility or hidden in design and less spacious. It's biologically perfectly normal to feel wary of a subway tunnel.
