It's more like a mix between a 4x and freelancer. You have the explore/expand aspect of a 4x, but you also have the piloting on an individual first person level. Currently I'm building up my stonks to create a fleet of mining ships, but I could also go the space trucker way and just haul freight across the stars. It's an unfathomably comfy space sim with a lot of depth.
