Please everyone that played the game back in the day. It's not perfect, I don't like how dark it is now, how it toned down the campy atmosphere, but lots of stuff were improved, from movement to new mechanics like parry, graphics are great, Ashley is not a chore to deal anymore, and son on. There's plenty to love in the remake and I can easily see Capcom trying to capture this feeling in an eventual title.

RE4 is almost perfect. RE4make cuts some of the fat, or redistributes it.
The village seems significantly longer, which is what most people enjoyed. The island is still a bitch, but it features imo the game's best part that is the underground labs. It's hit or miss there, but it keeps the same vibe intact. The castle benefits from better lighting, but I didn't like that they made Ashley's part more stressful and longer.
The enemies reacted better to damage in the OG. In the remake they are more ''stronger'' which doesn't work for me as much. And of course Ada is an objective degradation, both in looks as in voice.

The problem is the game is designed around yellow paint telling you what to do. One early puzzle in exploring the caves around the lake has you run up a small indoor tower with a lockbox inside, and then you have to go out and around and see the combination for opening it painted on the cave walls surrounding. Not only does it raise the in-universe question of "who the fuck got up on the cave wall opposite with lake water beneath to paint the answer", but if you remove the paint with a mod, it's 100% guesswork as the answer ceases to exist. Pushing aside logical factors of problems with this, it's just stupid from a game design perspective because there's more organic ways to create progression markers and puzzle solutions.

Fucking Half-Life 2 quite literally shines brighter map lighting on notable locations so players are more likely to go that way, and that was 2004.

I think it's because it was a high-profile remake of an already high-profile game that was pretty recent as it was. The fact that REmake doesn't suck as a game by itself made people default to that opinion, that it was better because it wasn't worse.

To actually know that it's worse than the original you actually have to understand what made the original good, you have to dive into the details and the design that isn't explicitly shown or stated through the gameplay.

It's especially annoying since they're still two very different games balanced and factored in very different ways. RE4R not being as super stop-on-a-dime precise as RE4OG doesn't mean much when the combat mechanics and systems at work shift between a game that has you constantly on the move to never stand in one place for too long while also being able to sprint and duck about, and the other game is stop-and-go beat em up precision positioning about lining up groups and knocking them down with no other forms of movement but walk or run.
I can get that stagger's also a bit of a sore point for OG fans, but the new game is pretty much balanced around it happening less so you don't constantly bowl over entire groups like nothing. And that's basically the thing: despite RE2R and 3R playing nothing like their originals, everyone keeps wanting 4R to play like the original, and it simply isn't.

Tank controls meant finagling around enemies and a slow backpedal, but the analog control let you instantly turn around out of their attacks. 4 Remake doesn't want to just be "lol we repackaged 4 with modern graphics", it also wants to take pages from 2 Remake to be a survival horror game mixed with action, so letting players stop on a dime would fuck with it.
