If it did set any "records" it's probably just due to the overall growth of the gaming industry + online shopping making it more possible to get things on day 1. That's not the greatest thing. The last time Japan made a significant portion of sales was the 3DS which was Nintendo's worst selling handheld. The Switch sold 54 million in the US and 34 million in Japan. But here, the Switch was just under 1 million in Japan and 1.1 million in the US. This might also be why we saw a ton of stores have stock and why it seemed like no one was talking about it. Nintendo expected it to sell way faster in the US than it did. In a country as big as the US, 1 million isn't as big of a deal as 1 million in Japan. The launch sales are good but its also a function of just the amount of consoles they shipped. Once we get past the usual early adopters, it may be a harder sell in the US over the console's lifespan

Depends a bit on your definition of emulation but kinda, yeah.
Previous consoles like the Wii and the 3DS basically had the entire previous system in them, so for playing older games they "swapped" you to that one. This was the easiest solution since it meant the older games would always work exactly as expected.
Switch 2 doesn't use that but a compatibility layer, so Switch 1 games instead take full advantage of the Switch 2's specs. Good thing about this is that you get things like faster loads and better framerates, bad things is that some games will have issues not present in the Switch 1 version due to any things that can't be properly "translated" to Switch 2 code.

The logic behind console consumption today is very similar to that of computers. Look at how people have slowly migrated from PS4 to PS5, even without a lot of blockbusters encouraging the migration. People simply get tired at some point and want to upgrade, and this is no longer motivated by AAAs as in the past, but is more similar to the dynamics of PCs, where you upgrade when gaming performance starts to leave a lot to be desired.
In the case of the Switch, there were at least 10-20 million "hardcore" users who had been clamoring for an upgrade for at least 2 or 3 years. Nintendo held back the Switch 2 for at least 2 years longer than expected, and now that it's finally on the market, a lot of people have made the much-needed upgrade, because the Switch 1 is really a piece of shit of a hardware.

Not exactly. Switch 2 doesn't run Switch 1 games natively with a Hardware solution like the Wii U, 3DS, GBA, etc.
Switch 2 uses a Software solution akin to what Microsoft does with its backwards compatibility.
It's not as hardware demanding as an actual emulator, but it needs deep understanding of both systems from the developers of the compatibility software.

I don't give a shit about Mario Kart, and I hardly ever play my Switch 1 even though it's the only console I own... yet, for some reason I keep checking availability on this fucking thing. Basically convinced myself that I want it for some reason - and see I can have it tomorrow with Amazon Prime.

Should I bother? I just never played the original in handheld mode, and my joycons all drifted. Only the pro controller has held up, so I always play docked if I do play. Kinda feel like taking it on the road this summer and smashing shit in Donkey Kong Bananza in handheld mode.

I guess my only concern is that it sells out and becomes hard to get, and/or tarrifs (I'm in Canada). But that's not very likely at this point, is it?

No, emulation is when you use software to re-implement a machine's architecture, which are the abstract blueprint of the guts. The reason people get confused is because of Low Level Emulation (LLE) vs High Level Emulation (HLE). HLE is what the Switch emulators do - it turns Tegra code into code that modern graphics libraries can work with. The "shader cache recompilation" cost you see in these emulators is because the computer is taking shader code written for the Tegra and translating it to shader code for your GPU. FPGA programs change the hardware behavior themselves because these programs basically specify the circuitry. So they're suitable for writing LLE's, because what you're essentially doing is recreating your own version of the original chip.

Both HLEs and LLEs have their place and specific challenges.
