The scadutree is never explained. No characters aknowledge it, it has no bearing on any plot events the player participates in, and it's outside the play area boundaries. I didn't read most of the DLC item texts but apparently the scadutree is not mentioned in them either.

It isn't. The Lands of Shadow is the center of the Lands Between. Geographically, the map would fit in the center of Elden Ring's base game map.

You can't actually "die" in the lands between anymore, but Death is necessary to become the next Elden Lord. That's why the tarnished were banished to die outside of the Lands so they could return and become the next Elden Lord.
