Why can't Westerners replicate it?

Because the Japanese consider love to be something pure and meaningful, and a variety of characters are just the icing on the cake.
Western writers treat Titanic like the ultimate romance movie, even though most of it, aside from the ship sinking, is about Rose cheating on her fiance with some guy she met two days ago. If that’s their idea of love, there’s no way they’re ever writing anything on the level of the Japanese. We don't really have a concept of love, we have a concept of partnership and you can see that everywhere, starting from movies to TV shows to video games.

I think the real explanation is that the Japanese write a lot of romances so some turn out good. Most stories here don't really put any effort into it so we just don't get the volume to turn out good stuff from the bad.
