No innovation compared to TTYD. It’s the same boring themes that plague the majority of Mario games. There’s a grassy area, a desert area, lava area, etc. But if you like that, then yes it would be better than TTYD. TTYD never feels like a Mario game.

If every other Mario RPG wasn't doing its own thing maybe I wouldn't agree but Paper Mario is the only one that feels like it takes place in the same world as the normal Mario games. I like that the other RPGs aren't afraid to do crazy stuff but can't we get more than one Mario RPG that tries to feel like Mario? That and also I liked spinning.

Opinions like this perfectly illustrate how little the average gamer actually cares about gameplay quality. TTYD improves upon 64 in literally every facet of its gameplay. But who cares? It has le mario themed worlds! Watercolor backgrounds!! ZOMG mario can do da spin!
Just tiresome. It's no wonder so many companies release half-assed games these days.

Look at the faggot above you, acting as if BATTLES, the things you spend 75% of your time in, don't matter compared to the game being "charming" or "memorable". Gee yeah I'd rather have a memorable setting than an actually enjoyable game to fucking play.

Hey dipshit, TTYD literally encourages exploration MORE. There are more side quests, more shines than super blocks, more badges to find, etc. Also "muh linear level design" is a retarded complaint. I really never realized this series would devolve into people debating over whether the first or second game is better. All I remember is after I played them both for the first time in the 2000s, I thought they were almost exactly equal quality but I preferred TTYD just because it was longer and had more content and I thought that was the tiebreaker between two otherwise equal games. I came to that conclusion as a kid many years ago and I haven't changed my opinion since then because I haven't really played the games since then either, lol.

TTYD had like 4 areas that were fun. The backtracking was shit. They added some cool things to battling, but went way overboard with having the level limit on HP/FP/BP be 99. Super guarding trivializes the game, should have been further reduction and not an i-frame. Because BP is 99 and duplicate badges can be farmed from the casino, there is no actual build varience because you can equip 10+ power rushes AND have all the defensive stuff on with zero downside. Bowser was reduced to a joke. The cold open to PM64 was much better and had higher stakes.

Im sure theres more, but dont fucking pretend that TTYD was objectively better. Because it simply was not.

TTYD is better on a first playthrough but on repeats the backtracking becomes very obvious. Chapters like glitz pit, twilight town, and the train arent half as cool without the mystery. Also the lack of spindash makes the backtracking feel even more tedious.

Theyre both good for different reasons. I personally prefer PM64, but its like if thats a 95 out of 100 for me, TTYD is a 93 or 94. But when you have asshats like the fag claiming TTYD is something objectively better in every way, it gets grating.

I would take a true PM game based off of TTYD, even if I prefer it being more like PM64

Paper Mario was intended to be a sequel to Mario RPG. Even then, it came out after the concept of timed hits was established.

Paper Mario (for seemintly no good reason) prevents you using the timed hits/action commands till the end of the prologue when Twink brings you the required item.

Have you not played the game?

Toy box is a lot of fun with all the Shy Guy varieties and various puzzles opening up the areas of the Toy Box. Pretty fun final boss too

Flower Fields I think gets a bad rap because of the backtracking but I like all the flower characters and the music is pretty great. Very satisfying once you’ve cleared up all the troubles at the end

On Ice is just a good final challenge before the final level. Great music, great puzzles, decent enemy challenges and a solid boss to cap it off. Plus the murder mystery was pretty funny

What? TTYD rehashes so much shit from PM64.

Peach cake baking = potion brewing
Peach quiz show for the parosol = TEC quiz
Parasol stealth section = XNaut costume stealth section
First chapter is green plains with a Koopa villiage and castle
2nd chapter has the same "put objects into the 5 slots correctly" puzzle
Same "buy 2 items from the shop" password puzzle
Moon is just the desert from the first game except linear with no secrets
Train is just a rehash of the PM64's Chapter 7 murder mystery
Bow = Vivian
Koops = Kooper
Paper Boat = Sushi
Admiral Bobbery = Bombette
Yoshi = Parakarry
Goombario = Goombella
Final boss is invincible until cutscene plays

I'm probably missing some, but holy shit you are retarded.

The third game is also a respectable choice but the first Ace Attorney is the only one where I like all the cases. The self-contained nature of the first game being made without sequels in mind made it the tightest written. (except for the DS exclusive case. I do still love that case despite people's valid complaints with it.)

Also since no one else said yet Luigi's Mansion is an obvious one.

That's why PM needs a third game with the same RPG gameplay so it can improve TTYD without falling into TTYD's pitfalls.
