Why do gamers prefer to play as generic soldiers rather than heros/operators?

I prefer generic soldiers because that typically comes with the type of gameplay where one player is allowed to perform without restriction.
Hero elements usually come with a deliberate balance that prevents any one player from being able to stand out, forcing them to engage with contrived "teamwork" due to hamstringing them in one way or another.

same as why they dont want women
there's no sense of camaraderie if there are multiple de-facto protagonists involved, or members of opposite sex
when you get heros/snowflake named characters, it becomes a game that's more like a marvel movie or some shit
if you put women it stops looking like things people are familiar with (war movies, documentaries etc), and also male brain is wired differently when it hears female voice screaming
you just want to be with your bros struggling together to survive and achieve objectives together

because with making snowflake unique characters you go extra hard on diversity to make them stand apart and you end up with cringy characters

You used to still have roles or classes that fulfilled a certain purpose that other roles can't do as well.

Because being a random faceless soldier is more relatable and realistic than a "hero" who respawns 50 times in a battle

Heroes/operators are pure millennial gayness.
It's ironic that the generation that was raised to a point where they couldn't wipe their asses without using the buddy system now wants to play as "le supreme individual super soldier".

The Battlefield type of multiplayer shooter with Classes is less common, an outlier even, yet even BF allows a single player or a small squad to pick almost any class and top the scoreboard. They don't need the entire team to complete the objectives and win the match, just a single guy could carry the team through skill and tactics.

The more common multiplayer shooter has flexible loadouts or weapon selection and that was it, you were otherwise identical to everyone else and you had an equal ability to fight and defeat any other player, as well as take on several enemies at once and come out on top. You weren't beholden to any kind of rock paper scissors balance, no battle of attrition damage design, nor fundamental weaknesses that required teammates to make up for it.

>generic soldier
I can customise my character and be exactly how I want it to be and relate to it. Maybe even self insert if I want to, creating a cool background story I feel like it. Appealing to my monkey/child brain :)
>premade Hero/Mercenary
I'm forced to play as some annoying character imagined by some souless corpo trying to appeal to a 'cool' factor I don't even like. Worse if they don't shut the fuck up and try to be quirky, revelious just to seem cheeky. I don't get any decision in it whatsoever :(

I just don't like teammates bitching at me for not knowing some special power, or magic ability. Look at your loadout kit. See random, generic, class specific shit. Know what to do. Do.

Yea this
> generic Medic who spends more time blasting enemies
That's how medic works
> Hero Medic who done the exact same thing as generic
"This is actually a reference to his/her backstory where...."
Not my business.
If I want to RP as speshul character, I go play RPG

I don't care about capeshit. I care about simulating being a cog in the eternal war machine
Anonymous No.712590287 [Report] >>712591875
did TF2 start this shit? I know it's more in between classical roles and heros but the classes kind of became their own character which put a personality and face to a role and class.

tf2 characters still fit into their time period with an all guy cast if they made that game nowadays they'd forcibly add female characters taking the authenticity out of it

There's no angle from which identifiable characters make sense for a game with 64 players in a single match. You aren't going to make enough characters to not have stacks of duplicates all over the map so the best option by far is to make the characters look as generic within their role as possible.

I’m so tired of the trend of “wacky” and “unique” casts of characters now.
I just enjoy uniform groups, or just more toned down casts.
Not necessarily vidya, but I really like the Clone Troopers and just want shit with a bunch of same armored Temmura Morrisons. Show wise they focus everything now on shit like the bad batch which is a great example of the whole wacky operator cast.

Because the heroes and operators are written like total fags, and I like being a faceless cog in a machine; best form of teamwork.
