I know it's probably because of some jewry in the contract Sony/Bungie signed, but it's insane to me to release a game you know will not succeed. Something you know is just going to lose money. Even Sega had the brains to cancel Hyenas.

there's a process by which you'd have to "prove" you deserve the tax break, and cancelling it before it comes out might not be an option since they were demonstrably so close to releasing and the only reason they wouldn't is because of plagiarism, which they can potentially skate on by claiming a subcontractor was the responsible party and the person they stole from isn't pursuing damages apparently, but that might get muddied if they have to directly address it in a legally-binding capacity

I am saying there are a ton of Extraction games.
And the game industry as a whole seems to be convinced Extraction games are the new trend.
But the only people playing Extraction games are streamers. And every a new extraction game comes out, streamers play it and say "it's not as good as tarkov".
What I am saying is the industry is full of idiots making AAA games for "content creators" instead of normal people.

Destiny's gameplay is dogshit.
Feels way too smooth. Too much aim magnetism. You're limited to the weapons you're carrying, can't pick up dropped weapons and items from enemies, there's almost no physics interaction with the environment.
And you better like upgrading by having Engrams dropped on you according to an algorithm designed to keep you addicted, because that's the only source of variety.
Fucking dogshit game.

All of this. Destiny feels like outsourced teams make environments, and Bungie just put spawn points for enemies in the maps.

None of it feels organic, the platforming always feels like you’re going out of bounds.

>Limited the weapons you’re carrying
This is another point. In Halo, you could design combat scenarios based on the idea that you were constantly swapping weapons. A horde of perched Jackals becomes a sniper shooting gallery.
What’s the equivalent of this in Destiny?

There’s no semblance of level design in the game.
If you do Final Shape’s opening, you can see it immediately. You’re walking up strange ramps at weird angles, double jumping through weird gaps, crouching.

If it didn’t have the quest marker, you’d be absolutely lost.

I only played most of D1 (except Rise of Iron) and the D2 launch campaign, so I wouldn't know what their level design is like now.
Most of it was definitely a step down from Halo.

I’d argue that Bungie haven’t even changed much from Halo 1.
Destiny still is Halo, it even had Halo 1’s non descriptive level design where you get lost in alien structures.

Halo2’ and Reaches levels are better, but that’s because they honed the craft of cinematic set pieces in linear levels.

Destiny doesn’t have that to fallback on, so everything just feels detached, EXCEPT when the set pieces come back.

I think Destiny's level design is a step down from Halo.
I'm too tired to try to remember any of it, but I just remember tons of doors covered in "darkness" fog, that you couldn't go through, but endless waves of enemies would come out of.
There's nothing that egregious in the Halo games.

Looking forward to it. Good things tend to suffer/not have it easy/get attacked.

Hopefully more Dev time turns it into something special instead of a cash grab. Might make it better not expected to go well, not supported and snubbed by reviewers. Like nearly every good thing that has ever existed.

Bungie doesn’t have the heart to make a post-Cyberpunk game.
It’s one thing to reference Ghost in the Shell, it’s another thing to understand the deeper themes.

This is what gets people talking about your game online. People don’t want PvP highlights, that’s for Fortnite and streamers.
They want an emotional connection, the same one they had while watching the cinematic trailer.

I’ll just say it straight: you can’t make Marathon in 2025 with the perspective of a neo-liberal mindset. It just can’t be done.

It’s like if someone who uses pronouns made Evangelion. It just doesn’t work, you can encapsulate the narrative themes from the framework of an emotional fallacy, as opposed to an open question, which for Eva and Marathon are “the nature of life and godhood”.

I also would not say this about Marathon. Or Eva really.

I don't disagree that it's an uphill battle to make something like the original Marathon, or do justice to the original Marathon, from a neoliberal perspective.
But I don't think you could make something like the original Marathon from your perspective,

No that’s the core issue, it’s just not in the vernacular of online talk because everyone’s young online and that’s gay to frame it that way.

The mentality of Bungie is of self importance, that’s the social stance. If you can’t tear yourself down, tear your thought process down, you cannot make Marathon in 2025, because the anime concepts it borrows from in Akira and Ghost in the shell, they are not rooted in the mentality of 2025.
That Bungie mentality, is a byproduct of lack of wanting to dismantle their reality.

What people are asking here, is for a AAA game studio, to make something inspired by Akira/GItS, in 2025, and not have it be marred by weird propaganda.

And the the counter is, “It’s just a shooter bro”, and that’s the problem.

No.
Marathon is almost the opposite of what you say it is.
And much of it is very personal to Greg Kirkpatrick, who is a dangerous kind of genius.

Marathon’s hook, is “Doom for intellectuals”, right?
That method of writing the lore and AI conversations in Marathon and Syetem Shock 1, those are gone.

People can’t write shit like that anymore, and then you have ask, “Well why can’t they? What changed?”, and that’s what the whole conversation devolves into.

When the average /v/ user is saying the Marathon characters look woke or ass, what are they actually saying? What are they disagreeing with artistically?

Absolutely.
It's so low effort that simply teleporting them in would feel more authentic. Halo's ship deliveries were just mob delivery but it worked well in CE and others, these fake doors and INVISIBLE WALLS that only enemies can pass through are simply awful.

It's probably perceived that way now, but it's hook was more "it's Doom for the Mac"

>When the average /v/ user is saying the Marathon characters look woke or ass, what are they actually saying? What are they disagreeing with artistically?
I'd say it's a lack of a certain energy. I won't say it's "testosterone" or "sex appeal" but whatever the character designs are lacking it is adjacent to those ideas. Drive. Intent. Thrust. Willpower. Killing intent. And so on.

>That method of writing the lore and AI conversations in Marathon and Syetem Shock 1, those are gone.
They are not popular. Out of style. But it's far from "gone".
Even some of Destiny 1's writing was on par with some of the better writing in Marathon.
It's just instead of in-game terminals it was sequestered away onto a phone companion app until it got copied to fan wikis.

There was also the problem of a lot of the writing very clearly being gutted with Joe Staten being fired and the mid-production story rewrite.
So you have stuff like this
https://www.ishtar-collective.net/cards/legend-the-black-garden
which hints at what the Traveler is, and it's mostly left un-revisited
unless they touch on it in later expansions, but I noped out before I could find out.
